As you're typing in the search term, you're also given a "Name contains <term>" option in the dropdown if you're strictly searching by filename
felix318 · 2 years ago
Sure but why not give me file name matches first instead of random pictures, since I started the search from Finder itself? Why try to outsmart the user?

I have no problem with searching pictures using keywords if it’s limited to the Photos app.

"Taxi" is universally understood, in my experience. (TFI calls it a "runner up" candidate.)

"Kaput" is another.

Taxi, bar, hotel, restaurant, are very common. Maybe because of tourism?

I have no idea what “kaput” means…

It's not that Google search has necessarily gotten worse, but it's lagging behind the shitiffication of the web caused by SEO and the new features (People Also Ask QA synopses) have absolutely horrible accuracy.

ChatGPT and other LLMs are also absolutely horrible on accuracy, don't get me wrong.

But, here's an example of what's wrong with Google.

I search something like "Can mangoes grow in Washington state?" and at the top of my results is the condensed "People Also Ask" question answer result. These attempt to read and condense a webpage (of questionable accuracy) into an answer for my query, but they are often full of shit.

For example expanding "Where are mangoes grown in WA" shows an answer about Western Australia rather than Washington. Another answer tells me "yes" but when I read the actual article it clearly says "no, they won't survive".

I find it interesting that people write Google queries in correct, often polite English as if there is something intelligent on the other side. When I try this query: "where mango grow washington" I seem to get decent results, but the human-sounding query does return garbage.

Perhaps the problem with Google is that it's trying too hard to convince people that it's smarter than it really is. I treat it as a stupid, mindless computer and it works fine most of the time.

felix318 commented on Is technical analysis just stock market astrology?   alicegg.tech//2023/07/25/... · Posted by u/zer0tonin

I’ve always loved technical analysis discourse because it’s the starkest example of how to actually make money in financial markets, and that’s to actively cultivate information asymmetry among other market participants. If technical analysis were a successful strategy, it would, like most other techniques that can actually generate sustainable alpha, be a closely guarded secret. But it’s not. It’s something people shout about from the rooftops trying to get rubes to follow the bait. It’s the same kind of play as wallstreetbets, where you’re tying to increase the amount of stupid, predictable money in your corner of the market.

I don’t understand how it’s possible to make money in the stock market unless you have inside information. I deeply suspect the whole game is rigged and there are ways to do insider trading without getting caught, and the real secret to be a successful trader is to find out how to join the club.

Somewhat unrelated: shouldn’t it be pronounced “Dvorjak”? That is how the other famous Dvorak (Czech composer) is pronounced.

Carbon offsets is like a doctor telling a grossly obese patient to mitigate the problem with periodic fat removal. This gives the patient a false hope that he doesn't need to completely change how he lives.
felix318 · 3 years ago
Merits and criticisms aside, carbon offset has a striking semblance with the sale of indulgences practiced by the Catholic church in the middle ages. Some patterns of thought seem ingrained in us.
