WhatsApp has a somewhat similar feature - pull up to start a group voice chat. You can ping others to let them know you're around.

The only time I've seen this feature be used is when my grandma accidentally turns it on in the family groupchat - I just don't wanna hang out with my friends in WhatsApp
fdgjgbdfhgb commented on Náhuatl and Mayan Language Renaissance Occurring in Mexico   yucatanmagazine.com/mayan... · Posted by u/bryanrasmussen

I don’t know much about Náhuatl, but the term “Mayan Language” is a bit misleading as there are actually numerous Mayan languages, something I’d never really thought about before I did a service trip to Chiapas and Guatemala in the early 90s and was exposed to the Jacalteco language which is just one of many Mayan languages.

Mexico is probably the most linguistically diverse country of the world with 68¹ indigenous languages spoken (I had thought India might be a close competitor where it seems there’s a different language in every state, each with its own alphabet, but Wikipedia says that there are “only” 22 scheduled languages in India).

We have a tendency to flatten indigenous cultures (like the bizarre mixing of culturally and linguistically distinct Native American cultures) and this is even more true of the Mesoamerican cultures where a diverse group like the Mayans is treated as a monolithic entity (as well as one that’s extinct) rather than as the diverse and living culture that it is.

1. The Wikipedia article on languages of Mexico has differing numbers throughout the article, offering 68, 65 and 62 as the number of officially recognized languages (and maybe more options if I weren’t skimming so quickly).

While Mexico is certainly very linguistically diverse, it doesn't even come close to Papua New Guinea's over 800 languages [1]

> Nobody grows headcount if they don't have to.

From my experience in corporations this is a false statement. The goal of each manager is to grow their headcount. More people under you - more weight you have and higher position you got.

fdgjgbdfhgb · 4 months ago
There is a difference between business owners (who don't want to spend money unless they have to) ans managers (who want career growth and are not necessarily worried about the company 's bottom line wrt headcount)

Can you elaborate on the technicals? Is it a phone app? Does it work through QR codes or NFC? Is there a Pix "card"?
fdgjgbdfhgb · 5 months ago
You use your bank's phone app. You can scan a QR code or you can send money to someone if you know their "id string", like a phone number, an email or a random string of numbers - you choose the "id string" format you want, and you can have different "ids" linked to different bank accounts. There are no physical cards.

I’m just curious if anyone here has actually heard of this company before this announcement? If you have, what is your opinion on this acquisition?
fdgjgbdfhgb · 5 months ago
I've seen them at trade shows and heard good things. I had also heard that Google tried buying them last year but it didn't go through, I'm curious about how/why they did it now

I started with LLPSI along with Oerberg's companion books (Colloquia Personarum, Fabellae Latinae, Fabulae Syrae). After that I read Hyginus' Fabulae and then Commentarii de Bello Gallico by Caesar. Since then I've read more Caesar, Nepos, Apuleius, Seneca, some Livy, some Catullus, some Cicero, and I'm currently reading Ovid. I did this by reading Latin for at least 1 hour every day since the first COVID lockdown in 2020, even if I was sick or not feeling it I made sure to get my Latin reading in. I did do a lot of grammar drills in the beginning, and I made an Anki deck for vocab. Grammar drills definitely help big time, along with jumping in head first with a book like LLPSI and reading from the get go is the way to go IMO.

Did you ever read Roma Aeterna? Or did you go straight into literature?

There's also a version arranged by Ron Grainer.

Well that entire dogma is giving us monsters like Mother Theresa who thought that by letting people in her care suffer she made it more likely they will make it to heaven - and well, the Catholic Church has agreed with that interpretation and made her a Saint.

This was touched upon in a game called Indika released this year......there's a story there how a guy ended the suffering of his young child who was in constant pain, and was told by a priest during confession time "well you see by killing your son you condemned your soul to eternity in hell, but your child is now definitely in heaven, so actually you did a good thing by sacrificing yourself!". And so the guy went and killed the rest of his family, having come to a logical conclusion that he can't get any more condemned to hell than he already is, but if he guarantees that his entire family goes into heaven then surely that's an absolutely amazing thing to do. I don't know if this was based on a true story or not, but the logic totally applies.

This is all very unfortunate. It's sad to see liberalism dying in Brazil in real time. The very little reported thing is that this judge also installed a fine of something like $8000 per month (more than double the top percentile salary) for anyone using a VPN and also demanded that Apple and Google remove X and any VPNs from their app stores.

Brazil is rapidly turning into a police state.

fdgjgbdfhgb · a year ago
The VPN part was almost immediately overturned, but it is concerning that it was included in the first place

» “These games are for the athletes who have been dreaming of them for years and fighting for the holy grail of standing on the podium – and someone’s sabotaging that for them,” she said.

» More than 45,000 police officers, 10,000 soldiers and 2,000 private security agents are being deployed

Here it is written, games are for athletes, not for people who live in Paris. City of a few million people grinds to a halt, for several weeks.

Paris does not even get any money for this "privilige", they have to pay for their own abuse!

fdgjgbdfhgb · a year ago
It really depends on where in the city you live - I live in the north of Paris and so far this has not affected me in any way. In fact, I already went to a couple of Olympic matches (a bunch of sports have started already), and I'm enjoying it immensely.

The city center had restricted access for about a week and is completely inaccessible for 2-3 days, which sucks for the people that live and work there, but it's a far cry from the `several weeks` you mentioned. I think folks are blowing the impact of the opening ceremony way out of proportion.
