mqtt? How many Docker containers do you have running to track UPS voltage?

I keep forgetting SNMP is not "web scale" and only for greybeards on a minimum of 3+ prescription medications.

LOL, docker for running mosquitto at home? Who does that?

How hilariously complicated.

Make UPS data available over SNMP, track via MRTG. A simple, decidedly 1990s solution that unsurprisingly still works. Pretty graphs and everything.

Complicated? It's a 10 line shell script and a single configuration item in the nut config.

How does ntfy compares to Pushover?
fanatic2pope · 6 days ago
I don't know, I've never used pushover. A quick look at their home page doesn't seem to indicate the option of self hosting on a VPS, so that precludes it for me. Otherwise from the code samples provided, it looks quite similar.

I have a home server that is on 24x7 protected by a UPS. The UPS monitoring daemon (nut) provides a hook for calling a script when its status changes, so I have it push a high priority notification to my phone via ntfy whenever it goes on battery or off battery. I also have it broadcast on mqtt so that in the future I can have a dedicated daemon that will collect stats and take other actions that aren't really appropriate for a hook script.

"Eye of the Tiger" is a choice ringtone and I like the story of how it got to be famous, since 'another one bites the dust' didn't make the cut. So sad you have to go through hoops to get it on your phone. If there was 'justice' in this world, you would be able to ask Siri to set 'eye of the tiger' as your ringtone and that be accomplished with no difficulty.

In Android land we haven't got quite that ease of use, to my knowledge, however, I always set a song from my music library of MP3 files to be the ringtone, only changing this when I get a new phone every few years.

For me, a custom ringtone means it is my phone and not someone else's that is ringing. This means that I do answer, even if quite distracted, and this has been very helpful at times. I have tried a few songs over the years, and a relatively calm intro helps, so, to others, it sounds like music easing in rather than a ringtone. I can catch it before the bass drops.

I assume the grass is always greener in the land of Apple, but, it surprises me that they don't make custom ringtones easy. I thought Apple was for the creative types and the free thinkers that would care for such things.

Re the article, just thought I should share an intrusive thought: crazy frog had a p3nis. Once noticed, it cannot be unnoticed. :Shudder:

I also set a custom ringtone for the important people in my life. If my wife, kid or boss call me, I will know it by the sound. Super useful.

If anyone is interested in seeing the real thing, there's an 'old TVs' museum in Toronto, Canada with a bunch:

Wow, Moses Znaimer was a cornerstone of my early media consumption with CityTV and MuchMusic. Next time I am in Toronto I am definitely checking this out. Thank you.

Forgive my ignorance but I am curious if this be a good alternative for an android user who uses a Fitbit primarily for tracking sleep and heart rate and who would love a more open platform? Would something like this be usable as a reliable replacement or is it more targeted at hobbyists? What apps do pebble users use for tracking things like heart rate, sleep and steps?

The American wine industry is also taking a huge hit thanks to Trump's tariffs and his anti-Canadian rhetoric.

My personal anecdote around this issue was from when my mother was dying of pancreatic cancer. Once the actual process of dying started, the doctors and nurses worked to "keep her comfortable" but the pain killers didn't do much. For those last few days it struck me that in essence she was being tortured to death from the inside and all we could do was sit around and wait for the pain, and her life, to end. The last thing she ever said to me, through gritted teeth in her native tongue was "how long does it take to die?" I will never forget that and I will always support the right for anyone to choose dignity.

The Republican gerrymander of Ohio is egregious. The Ohio Supreme Court has repeatedly found against their maps but the ruling party refuses to change them.

A few years ago there was a citizen’s initiative to create an impartial redistricting body, but OHSecState rewrote the ballot text so that it sounded like the opposite: an attempt to enshrine gerrymandering in the Ohio Constitution.

Truly absurd behavior, real scofflaws.

They celebrated their successful "confusing the voters" strategy quite openly too.
