Yes Barclays, we need 12k chatbots, if not 120k chatbots. Now talk less invest more.

I think many non technical people have an incorrect understanding of "AI", where they conflate a single example of what neural networks can do, namely chat bots, with an entire field.

Even if chat bots have no significant advances in the foreseeable future, "AI" as in large neural networks have already proven themselves to be extremely useful and able to accomplish a lot of things which are almost impossible to do without them.

I keep seeing this argument that there is value out there, but for normal people all we are seeing is spam, cute ai cat pics on different social medias, can you please give a few examples of fields/problems where AI has been really helpful.

> “AI still remains, I would argue, completely unproven. And fake it till you make it may work in Silicon Valley, but for the rest of us, I think once bitten twice shy may be more appropriate for AI,” he said. “If AI cannot be trusted…then AI is effectively, in my mind, useless.”

This quote is enough to dismiss the whole article.

The issue that LLMs are constantly hallucinating and are not capable following long term rules. Since its still niche, its not a problem but what if professionals like Lawyers or doctors start using it day to day, then we are in trouble. I wouldn't go as far as saying its useless but its effectiveness is very close to zero in most fields not related to spamming.
falloutx commented on Statement from Scarlett Johansson on the OpenAI "Sky" voice   twitter.com/BobbyAllyn/st... · Posted by u/mjcl

They approached Johansson and she said no. They found another voice actor who sounds slightly similar and paid her instead.

The movie industry does this all the time.

Johansson is probably suing them so they're forced to remove the Sky voice while the lawsuit is happening.

I'm not a fan of Sam Altman or OpenAI but they didn't do anything wrong here.

falloutx · a year ago
Then they should credit that actress and we can see if its legit, otherwise we believe they used copyrighted audio from S. Johansson's movies.

How did they even cheat here?

OpenAI did nothing wrong.

The movie industry does the same thing all the time. If an actor/actress says no they you find someone else who can play the same role.

If they are so "Open" they should reveal their training data which created this voice. I am sure it is just movie audio from S. Johansson's movies.
falloutx commented on Uber to pay $272M to Australian taxi operators   smh.com.au/technology/ube... · Posted by u/schappim

It's worth noting that Australian taxis are generally terrible. They're expensive and notorious for ripoffs, particularly from the airport: scenic routes, bogus surcharges, "broken" credit card machines (plus 5% surcharge when they do work), drivers refusing destinations (by law they're not allowed to), and to top it all off they're not even safe, with taxi drivers responsible for a long string of sexual assaults.

Uber and its competitors have their own problems, but they're still way better, and they've forced positive change onto taxis as well with 13CABS (the largest company) now offering an Uber clone app with fixed fares, tracking, etc.

If you are on long contract with a cab company, for example if you are a corporation who regularly needs a cab to pick people up from Airport, the prices are almost 4x per trip as compared to Uber. Even at peak hours Uber is much better
falloutx commented on The Reason the Office Isn't Fun Anymore   wsj.com/lifestyle/workpla... · Posted by u/randycupertino

> “People are coming in to do occasional big meetings, but really the rest of the time, they want a quiet private spot to get on a Zoom call,” said Witting, a partner at the company. “It’s weird.”

It's not weird. Before we had open concept hellscapes, and the cubicle farm, people had actual offices. Four walls and a door you could close.

WSJ seems to have the memory of a goldfish if they can't hark back to a time before offices became a free-for-all for noise pollution.

Surprise, surprise, people want a quiet private space to do most of their work, and will gravitate toward those [limited] spaces in a modern office.

In my experience, 90% of the modern office was never fun. It was finding a floating desk, putting on noise cancelling headphones, and trying to ignore the constant interruptions to do your work. The only fun part was socialising during lunch/coffee with colleagues, but the rest of the experience was a huge net negative.

> Before we had open concept hellscapes, and the cubicle farm, people had actual offices

It is true, but the move to cubicles and in the end open halls was necessary because rent in prime employment centers of the world has gotten so high, and companies seem to be requiring ever more people and we cant afford to give everyone an office nowadays. Modern office is definitely better in some ways socially, I dont think you will be really motivated to go to work if all you had was one room to sit and close the doors to not see anyone. These days, You have more people to talk to if you want and sometimes its a good and safe environment to discuss things. If I had to sit in an empty room to work and then it wouldn't be any different than working from home.

There's quite a genius workaround to this - it's actually possible to link a credit card to your google account and buy something called YouTube Premium. Actually removes ads, even on TV, insane!

i used an ad-blocker on YT since forever, when they started blocking them I bought YT Premium over VPN in a cheaper country. not sure how google is supposed to serve 4k 60FPS videos to people all over the world without them paying. i pirate movies and shows at home so it's not like i don't get it. but the entitelment about watching YouTube for free is a bit weird to me. it worked for years, we were able to cheat the system by just blocking ads. now they're starting to prevent it. too bad for us. but ya just gotta deal with it.

i'm unhappy about it too, but i can't really blame them.

Google isn't some startup and no of people on ad blockers is minute
