There is a large difference between extracting fossil fuels from the ground and using substances extracted from plants. Only one of them is renewable, and hence the only sustainable way for the human species to live.
evilos · 2 months ago
Yes but it is important not to confuse the source with the form.

For example we can create hydrocarbons using solar/wind energy and that is still "renewable" even though hydrocarbons are involved. They are merely the medium of energy storage.

People have been prosecuted under that act for clicking "view source" on their web browser. The crime itself is irrelevant. It's more about who you are/what connections you have/who you piss off.
evilos · 8 months ago
Has there actually been a conviction purely for "viewing source"?

Notice a bunch of downvotes -- Apologies for being unfamiliar with the rules here (I've always been reading HN, but I'm new to commenting). I should've added a lot more details to my previous comment and been more specific. Any other guides would be helpful too. I'll be careful in the future.

When I learned OS, I followed MIT 6.828 (https://pdos.csail.mit.edu/6.828/2017/overview.html) and implemented a small OS called JOS based on Xv6. So if you're looking for some teaching OS in x86, check it out.

I suspect you were downvoted because your comment sounded like it was generated by an LLM.

The allegation is the prosecutor got a cushy gig at the law firm, not that they subsequently worked on the case after switching sides.
evilos · a year ago
Ah so the implication is not that the prosecutor gave them inside info on the government's case's weaknesses but the prosecutor intentionally played the case suboptimally in hopes of being paid after the fact? If this was done with prior assurance that sounds already illegal no? If it was done simply on the hopes of securing "payment" afterwards with no prior deal then that seems like a large risk for the prosecutor to take.

> Boeing’s lead corporate criminal defense law firm is Kirkland & Ellis. Cox, the lead prosecutor in the Boeing case, left the Justice Department earlier this year. And last month she joined Kirkland & Ellis as a partner in its Dallas office.

It looks like the firm bought the prosecutor, resulting in a win for its client. How could this be prevented, though? Politicians can't be trusted with oversight like this--they would use it to punish prosecutors and would inevitably further politicize the Justice Dept.

Can't a law be passed that states prosecutors legally cannot consult or assist in cases or for defendants they were involved with during their tenure as a prosecutor for X years after they leave their position?

Yeah it broke my Linux Mint. I run mint all day while developing and then switch to windows 11 to game every once in a while.

I think there's a way to fix it but I had to disable secure boot to work this week.

I've had way more issues with windows 11 than with linux Mint. Like way more.

evilos · a year ago
I keep a W11 drive in my system (separate drive from my main linux system) for games and I find I haven't booted into it in months.

And I know when I do it'll take probably an hour to get all the updates out of its system. Ugh.

The big secret I learned to late in life:

The higher up you go in the corporate ladder, the easier your job is. Less stress, more respect, less hours. Decisions you make are hard to tie back to incompetence

The same holds true for companies with too much cash on hand

evilos · 2 years ago
? I thought this was understood by most. It's a common portrayal in media as well.
