They also lack any and all useful features. Even just the ability to tap for pause is critical to my daily life.

I just wonder if wired fans just never skip forward a song, or adjust the volume. Or even use active noise canceling.

Many wired headphones have buttons and wheels too. We've been adjusting things via them for so long lol.

This isn't as simple as making everyone happy.

It's about the disrespect of not asking. Could Firefox have asked if users wanted to enable AI features? Of course they could have, did they? Of course not, just think about how would asking would effect the shareholders!!

I don't disagree with the premise that it's hard to make everyone happy, but the problem isn't about pleasing everyone, it's about treating users with respect, and not jumping on the AI everywhere bandwagon, without asking first. Especially because Firefox has billed itself as privacy protecting, and AI is definitely not privacy focused. One might even say, privacy violating... From the privacy focused browser...

That sounds horrible. I'm using proton unlimited and I've always wondered how can I backup my simplelogin to switch to other alias services.

Backup emails on main proton is not hard and wouldn't damage much, but I have different alias services for different sites on simplelogin and I would end up having to change emails on all those sites if simplelogin simply lock my account out of the blue.

The illustrations on the home page are some of the most hideous slop I've ever seen. Terrible first impression, and it really doesn't inspire trust in the quality of security of the service. Eventually companies will learn. But for now, eww.

Weird. Although I only used it briefly in the past, I remember the home page was not that bad. What happened to them?

With Brave you can have ad blocking built into the browser itself and not have to depend on a third party developer.
eipi10_hn · 19 days ago
And Brave's built-in blocker uses uBO's and other lists, including allowing trusted filters (which can inject high risk scripts into your sites) automatically. So yes, you are using 3rd party scripts already, and no, they can't monitor all of the commits from all those lists.

This UI is great but do you get this horrible thing where sometimes the browser is shows a white screen and you have to force stop the app? Happens all the time on the latest version for my Pixel 9a. And did on my Pixel 7 too before. It's really horrible and I can't pin down any rhythm or reason other than loosely seeming to happen more often when I'm in battery saver mode.

Fair, I could just buy a new Android phone, but at the time every non-flagship appeared to stop updates every two years, and being on an upgrade treadmill on that time scale did not seem like a fair use of my money. I have no idea if this continues to be the situation or if Android manufacturers have gotten better with their update cycles.
eipi10_hn · a month ago
Pixel A series (from Pixel 8A) is a non-flagship that will receive 7 years of updates. I bought 1 last year around less than $300.

Hmm yeah but their adversaries did achieve their goal by pushing it away from the mainstream sites. Now we're into this situation of "how much do I trust this vague Russian site with my browsing activity".

At least the addon declares the sites it's for and ignores the rest but still I'm a lot less comfortable with it. It's more something I'd install in a container now, limiting its usefulness :(

In practice I just use archive.today now.

eipi10_hn · a month ago
Yeah it's unavoidable. Bypassing paywalls is not a good idea for tools that depend on browsers' stores distribution.

God this site is cancer on phone, I'm reading the article and suddenly the whole screen is full of some signup crap and the onscreen keyboard, so I try to bail and no fewer than 3 times does it prevent me from swiping back. Serves me right for not browsing on desktop...

Anyway, back to the topic: the 8 TB SN850X I bought for 530 Eur is now 1k Eur from some random eBay listing, not very trustworthy: https://geizhals.de/western-digital-wd-black-sn850x-nvme-ssd...

That's why I turn off JS on these sites. The site now displays beautifully without craps.
