The thing about jj is that it doesn't actually enable any new capabilities. I tell people to use emacs or vim or vscode or whatever instead of notepad because it gives them new capabilities, things that are simply unavailable unless you're talking to an LSP or running a full-powered scripting engine. jj doesn't make anything possible the way going from notepad to a real editor does. What jj does do is it makes everything so much easier that you can now actually use all of those features that git theoretically gave you. Rebases? No more fiddling, no more wedges, no more digging through the reflog because you fat-fingered something, you just go `jj rebase` and... that's it. And if you get it wrong, you just do `jj undo` and... that's it. And if you just had a six hour manic coding marathon without committing anything and now you want to spread its batch of changes back down through your patch stack, you just do `jj absorb` and... that's it. It's not the difference between notepad and emacs where you're going from no LSP to LSP, it's the difference between emacs@2016 where LSP support is a week-long adventure and emacs@2024 where LSP support is five lines copy-pasted out of the info page.

jj is not just a new interface for git, it has a lot of new and powerful features to offer, even when you're using the git backend with a colocated repo. Just to name a few:

- deferred conflict resolution

- The very expressive revset language

- the op log and ability to undo any operation

Many things that you can do with the git cli are significantly easier and in some cases comparatively effortless using jj. If all you do is git add and git commit then you probably aren't missing out on much, but if you ever split or rebase commits you should definitely try jj.

No it isn’t. You’re exposing yourself to interest rate risk when doing that
ehzy · 3 years ago
Not in any meaningful sense if you are only looking to park the money safely and hold to maturity.

Buying 3 month T bills won't pay much, but it will pay more than the interest SVB pays on your checking account balance and importantly is backed by the full faith and credit of the us govt.

methinks you underestimate just how bad health care costs are in the US, especially for entrepreneurs who tend to not be able to afford good insurance. On top of that, where's the money coming for rent, power, food, etc? Her husband is a full time caretaker now so... he's not bringing in anything.

Yes, there's value in supporting the things you said, but ~9k patrons to support a creator who isn't creating, and her husband, and her medical costs and andandand... that's not actually very much, especially if she lives in a major city in the US where rent is frequently ridiculous.

The minimum subscription is $3 per month. Even if all 9,000 are paying the minimum it's $27,000 per month.

The dissemination of their thoughts and ideas.

ehzy · 3 years ago
With no attribution or way to discover the source. That's great for propagandists but maybe less great for everyone else.

Does anyone know if this works with Yubikey 4? I have a lightning to USB adapter but I can't seem to get it to work with these keys. It worked fine with A USB-C + NFC Yubikey Security key and a Google Titan key, but not Yubikey 4.

In the feature list, the most underwhelming item to me is the '1080p FaceTime HD camera'.

Aren't pretty much all cameras at least 1080p by now? I'd expect a top of the line laptop to have a multi-megapixel camera able to push 240fps for slowmo and windowing abilities to allow software zoom while still outputting a high enough resolution feed that someone viewing on another macbook pro can't see the pixels (ie. more than 1080p please!).

Heck, on a top of the line macbook, you could even have cameras on each corner so that clever processing could be done to get multiple angles and automatically pretend to have a 2nd cameraman for closeups from another angle.

Can anyone provide insight why Apple didn't put more effort into cameras?

My understanding is that it's actually quite difficult to fit a high quality camera into a laptop lid. If you look at how thin the lid is you'll notice it's at least twice as thin as a cell phone.

> So, USA makes some effort to stop ripoffs of unwitting "unaccredited" investors within the USA.

The problem is that it's a dubious premise to begin with to assume that someone's knowledge or competence is tied to their salary or net worth. It's just baseless gatekeeping.

It's also about their ability to withstand losses.
