ed4bb9fb7c commented on Ask HN: How can I get better at using AI for programming?    · Posted by u/lemonlime227

Hey, Boris from the Claude Code team here. A few tips:

1. If there is anything Claude tends to repeatedly get wrong, not understand, or spend lots of tokens on, put it in your CLAUDE.md. Claude automatically reads this file and it’s a great way to avoid repeating yourself. I add to my team’s CLAUDE.md multiple times a week.

2. Use Plan mode (press shift-tab 2x). Go back and forth with Claude until you like the plan before you let Claude execute. This easily 2-3x’s results for harder tasks.

3. Give the model a way to check its work. For svelte, consider using the Puppeteer MCP server and tell Claude to check its work in the browser. This is another 2-3x.

4. Use Opus 4.5. It’s a step change from Sonnet 4.5 and earlier models.

Hope that helps!

What a joke. Claude regularly ignores the file. It is a toss up: we were playing a game at work to guess which items will it forget first: to run tests, formatter, linter etc. This is despite items saying ABSOLUTELY MUST, you HAVE To and so long.

I have cancelled my Claude Max subscription. At least Codex doesn’t tell me that broken tests are unrelated to its changes or complain that fixing 50 tests is too much work.

Is there a way to make a screen video recording on Wayland? Nothing works for me. Debian testing.

A novel? You sure you're talking about the right book?

I made a mistake. Stop Walking On Eggshells by Mason & Kreger is the one I meant.

Sorry I don’t know your circumstances but “Walking on Eggshells” by Langford has literally saved me.

The only wisdom I can offer: other people emotions don’t have to control yours (despite what they tell you). The best take on this that I know: be like a goose - they don’t get wet, just shake it off.

And take care of yourself!

Not sure where I was looking. Sibling comments are right.

The correct title is “Stop walking on eggshells” by mason & kreger.

Can you elaborate on the last point? As someone going through a very hard time with my wife at the moment I’d love any words of wisdom.

I can’t believe there were only 3 loans in San Francisco.

But one of them is a whopping $661,500.00 to a cloud communications company. Such a joke!

Covid ruined our local family business. We didn’t see a cent despite applying left and right.

I always wanted to know where does this put me in the American race war:

- I come from Eastern Europe

- my ancestors were enslaved, bought and sold for hundreds of years as far as we know

- my family was raped, prosecuted and killed by NKVD, KGB and has been through gulag

- my family always struggled with poverty and only hard work and education of multiple generations got me where I am

- I’m white and didn’t see a person of color until I went abroad

- I emigrated to US 10 years ago

Company trainings are obviously a wrong place to ask this but: what is my place in the racism discourse? Why am I lumped with all the white people group and forced to “accept” white privilege? How do I get out of this madness without hurting myself?
