earlyriser commented on Show HN: Typeform was too expensive so I built my own forms   ikiform.com/... · Posted by u/preetsuthar17

Disclosure: I used to work at Typeform 2014 - 2016

Taking a look at the demo (https://www.ikiform.com/forms/a2675039-5901-4052-88c0-b60977...), I'm not sure where the comparison to Typeform comes in. Probably the most unique feature of Typeform is the focus on user experience of the forms themselves, everything else is/was mostly built to support the forms, and making it as easy to fill out as possible. Things like the back button always being visible, no validation of fields as you enter data, no progress indication and so all makes it seem like there is a lot of polish left to do.

I guess the form looks OK, which is alright of course, but I'm not sure it actually serves as an alternative to Typeform. It seems to me to sit somewhere in-between the traditional (ugly) form providers, and Typeform, which isn't a bad place to sit at, but maybe people expecting a Typeform-like experience would feel slightly bait-and-switched by the comparison.

There used to be another open source project that replicated the form themselves and the experience (as far as I remember), but seem defunct by now (for the last 6 years...): https://github.com/tellform/tellform Besides that, seems there are some other open source alternatives, but I can't say I've tried them all (at a glance, Quill Forms seems most similar to Typeform): https://github.com/search?q=typeform+archived%3Afalse&type=r...

I think they are using Typeform as form app. With an external view Tally, Typeform, Hotform are all the same, apps that make forms. I have use all of them, but I cannot remember their differences.
earlyriser commented on It’s nearly impossible to buy an original Bob Ross painting (2021)   thehustle.co/why-its-near... · Posted by u/rmason

I don't know why the article and everyone here is coming away with the conclusion that Bob Ross didn't want his art to be sold.

A simpler reasoning is that there wasn't any demand for his paintings while he was alive. His show ran from 1983-1994 and he died in 1995. He was reasonably popular at that time, sure, but Bob Ross as we know him only blew up in the 2010s in the internet/YouTube/streaming age.

Now there is a trove of 1,165 paintings which are no doubt valuable, but cannot all be sold because they would flood the market and decrease their own value. So Bob Ross, Inc. is cleverly keeping them under lock and key and letting the scarcity drive prices up.

Yeah, this was what happened when Warhol died, the market was flood with thousands of works.

It's incredible how many folks are saying to pay it forward when OP specifically ask about paying it back (the fwd is addressed in the initial prompt).

Call them, write letters, specifically tell them how they influenced you. My MIL was a teacher and 10 years ago she received a call from a pupil (now a middle age man) and he talk with her about how much she influenced him. It has been 10 years from the call, but it's one of her favourite souvenirs.

As an Albertan I really have to wonder who is behind this PR push. Immediately after the election there were people coming to my door, asking about my attitude towards separatism. There's been flyers and news articles, and now there's an article in the NY Times? Considering the relative unpopularity of the movement, whoever is bankrolling this has a big reach and deep pockets.

I think this is part of the Balkanization of the West ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foundations_of_Geopolitics ) and I'm really surprised this is not stronger in Quebec, but I guess it's more easy to orchestrate a propaganda campaign in English.

It looks a lot like Mass Effect Citadel, with the water reservoir in the middle. I'm surprised to not found some link documenting if it was inspired by it.

I do think random people are invested in my take on this game, yes. If they weren't, it wouldn't have been upvoted. It's actually very difficult to get links on the front page of HN, the signal to noise is quite high.

I post around a third to a half of the articles I write on my blog to HN – the ones I think people here will like. Sometimes they hit and sometimes they don't. Three weeks ago I wrote about Odysseus, a very ambitious larp, that was popular here:

https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=43414992

And last year I wrote about my thoughts on The Sphere in Las Vegas:

https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=40858165

As for things I disliked, I wrote about Tonight with the Impressionists, a VR exhibition in Paris:

https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=40745133

I think you are saying that anyone posting a positive article about something you don't know about on HN is a shill, which seems quite strange. Sometimes people genuinely like things and want to share their thoughts on why.

My final note is that Blue Prince is not a relatively unknown indie game. It was included for free on PS Plus and Xbox Game Pass at launch – quite unusual. It was also previewed by quite a few publications and is almost certainly going to be shortlisted in a lot of game of the year lists.

And to be clear, I have not been paid to write this article. There are no incentives involved whatsoever.

I haven't heard about this game until today, but literally 10 mins before reading this on HN I was reading this Polygon article about it https://www.polygon.com/awards/557285/blue-prince-game-of-th...

So it seems it's quite popular.

Can you edit the sound files with ffmpeg to get rid of any empty space before the sound effect?
earlyriser · 5 months ago
Yes, I could do that, but I'm not happy also with the quality of the samples and I need to produce more velocities.

This paper produces a good result: http://large.stanford.edu/courses/2007/ph210/otey2/. If you game is OK sounding synthetic, I've had good results simulating a string plucked off center, decay each harmonic proportional to the frequency, then adding reverb.

A sound font or VST plug-in with appropriate licenses may be another route, but I can't speak to how difficult that would be to work with. It's on my to-do list.

earlyriser · 5 months ago
Yes this looks perfect for what I'm trying to do. Thanks!

Not sure if you can help me here or someone reading this.

I'm trying to find something to programatically make piano sounds (and record an mp3) based on 2 params midi note and velocity. I'm making a videogame and I need the mp3 piano notes.

I got a free piano sample library, but the sounds start not always at the same microsecond, so I think I need to produce the samples by myself.
