dr_spicy commented on Apple to Limit iPhone 15 USB-C Cables to USB 2.0 Speeds: Report   extremetech.com/mobile/ap... · Posted by u/thunderbong

We are specifically talking about USB-PD fast charging cables which the Pixel 1 does not support.

Edit: The above sentence is incorrect, I misread a source. The original Pixel shipped with a USB-A to USB-C cable that supported 3.0 speeds and a USB-C to USB-C cable that supported 2.0 speeds. Since the Pixel 2 they only ship with USB-C to USB-C cables that support 2.0 speeds.

It supported 18w of USB PD. Is there some further spec?

There are a lot of co-ops in the US too, but that’s not quite what this is. I’m this case the town government bought and runs the store. A co-op might be better, but you may need a certain population threshold to make that work.

I have relatives on an island with a permanent population of about ~200 that cooperatively own their store

Crash detection isn't a thing in phones generally, but it's worth noting that all cellular devices, regardless of subscription/service status, can call 911 (even without a sim card). You don't need some subscription payment to do that.

Maybe not generally, but it's starting to be a thing https://support.google.com/pixelphone/answer/7055029?hl=en

I wonder if Amazon actually cares about cleaning robots, or if they're after the data roomba collects? https://www.theverge.com/2017/7/28/16055590/roomba-wont-sell...

Apparently iRobot is going to Amazon Devices and not Amazon Robotics, but who knows if they'll silently transfer a lot of that knowledge/talent after the acquisition

I completely agree with you.

We could solve two problems at once: get rid of a camera bump and make the battery bigger at the same time by using the extra space of the camera bump to house a bigger battery.

Not sure why it hasn't happened yet or if it has I don't know if it.

You sometimes can't even get the right thing from official brand stores. I bought a thermal paste product from the official Amazon ThermalGrizzly store (I did check) but Amazon delivered me a fake. Amazon co-mingles inventory.

The only reason I could quickly tell it was fake is because ThermalGrizzly provides an online serial number verification system, which isn't very common among most products. I'm not sure I'd trust Amazon for anything.

Amazon has a similar service now, but brands need to onboard so it's not super wide spread yet https://brandservices.amazon.com/transparency

>I interviewed for a position with Amazon a few months back to lead up a new research program to determine how they can better recruit and retain hourly workers.

Some companies take pride in promoting from within. McDonald's is well known for turning entry-level workers into store mangers, then regional managers, and so on. Walmart does this, too.

Does Amazon not have such a culture?

dr_spicy · 3 years ago
They definitely have some fluff pieces talking about cases where it happens, no idea how common it is relative to those others though
dr_spicy commented on Ask HN: Are companies preparing to end Remote?    · Posted by u/tropicalfruit

Sure but those returns have been delayed, not canceled in favour of a perma-remote policy. I don't think moving to Sioux Falls as an Amazon or Apple employee would work out 6-12 months from now.
dr_spicy · 3 years ago
At Amazon return to office is now up to middlemanagement some entire orgs are officially ok with full remote indefinitely. Outside these orgs some individuals can work from different locations on the same team. It's not quite clear what the average steady state will look like, but with a lot of internal hiring at Amazon, I would imagine things would gradually tend towards being fairly flexible

> like having the audacity to fly a [doesn't matter] flag.

I don't live in the US, and at best the concept is very rare here, and I don't like the idea of it, but that sort of thing is exactly what I would like.

Flying a flag (why?!) has much more impact (probably negative) on your neighbours than it does (presumably positive) you.

dr_spicy · 3 years ago
I think flying [let's say current nation's] flag, can very a bunch depending on the country, I know in Denmark as well as the US it appears much more common than in other parts of the world. And personally, once I'm used to a flag being flown, I don't really care which

This is completely based on personal experience, and a significant amount at that.

Most Indians who study Physics/CS/Math/Engg. do that because they want a high paying job and social prestige.

Most Americans who study these, are genuinely interested in these subjects. They are passionate about these.

dr_spicy · 3 years ago
Purely anecdotally, but it seemed like the majority of the students in my college classes, American or not, were probably more interested in the money than passionate
