It's not the first time I've noticed you spreading this misinformation on HN, so let me respond.

Most of AdGuard's staff relocated in 2022, and I (CTO and co-founder of AdGuard) personally live in Limassol, Cyprus. We commented on that publicly, but it seems that random forum posts often regarded as more reliable sources of information.

I am totally fine with anyone not trusting AdGuard for any reason, but please keep your statements factually correct.

PS: Sorry for sticking a small promo in the comment, but this year we're organizing the annual summit (adfilteringdevsummit.com) for ad blockers' devs on our home turf in Limassol, a perfect opportunity to meet us, other ad blockers and even browsers' devs.

So a lot of your staff remain in Russia?

If you've still got most of your devs working in Russia, and it looks like that from your github projects, I'm not sure what part of the comment you responded to is not correct or misinformation.

The only downside I experienced with using Apple Lockdown Mode is that my apple watch wont vibrate or notify me of incoming phone-calls on my iPhone.

I sort of see their side.

First you have to put aside whether they should have been there, and whether they committed crimes while on his property. Basically start by assuming the police in this situation are unsympathetic criminals.

What rights do they still have even if they’re the bad guys here?

They don’t have a right to privacy. It’s fine to publish videos of them stealing his money. It’s fine to make fun of them.

But do you have the right to use their image in a video, for profit?

Where’s the line between being allowed to make, own, and publish a video of someone, and being allowed to profit from it?

If Tom Hanks visits your restaurant and is on your security camera, that’s legal. You can own that, and even publish it as a fact.

But can you make a commercial showing him eating in your restaurant? No. You’d need a model release for that.

You don’t get to use a video for commercial reasons, even if it’s ok to use it for editorial reasons.

The police and famous actors occupy completely different roles in society and should be treated differently.

1. FDIC reserve fund (from the premiums they collect)

2. "a special assessment" aka a tax on member banks directly

dodgerdan · 3 years ago
3. SVB’s assets. They actually have enough assets to pay, but it will take time for those bonds to mature.

This is 100% a bailout and the wording that “no losses […] will be borne by the taxpayer” is a shameful misrepresentation. Just because a bunch of VCs and founders didn’t realize they were at risk of this happening if they kept all their money in one bank, they still bear the responsibility of their losses. Looking forward to this new future where uninsured deposits are actually 100% backed by the FDIC, so actually if your company spends any money to diversify or de-risk your banking posture based on how the rules are written, you’re a rube and potentially being irresponsible towards your shareholders
dodgerdan · 3 years ago
Not really. If 5 or 6 more regional banks fail next week due to depositors seeking the safety of big banks there won’t be enough money to guarantee deposits for more banks.

If they didn’t guarantee the SVB depositors that outcome would have been almost guaranteed, the train wreck would have impacted de-risked companies too, because the entire regional banking system would implode.

Not acting now to stop contagion because of some idea of fairness is short sighted.

Watching growing startups hire a junior data scientist to analyse their new mountain of data is very entertaining. One of their first findings is their revenue/growth seems to be dropping… “we need someone to focus on growth/revenue ASAP”. They hatch a plan, build a team and magically their growth starts to recover.

The issue was spotted in April/May, the building happens during the summer and is launched In September… I’ve watch this cycle happen so many times, I’ve given up trying to point out that the issue is just seasonality.

2+2=5. VC’s look super active right now because they’re fighting for a small number of solid investments. LP’s have turned off the money taps and fake investment marks no longer pay the bills. They need startups that will actually generate revenue, finding them requires a lot more work and thats what we’re seeing. Soon we’ll start to see broke B & C tier investment funds turn into zombies.
dodgerdan commented on Ask HN: Is anyone successfully self-hosting Firefox Sync?    · Posted by u/hosteur
gorgoiler · 3 years ago
Unfortunately, this isn’t really true. The party which holds your data is also the party which ships evergreen versions of the software used to decrypt that data. There’s nothing to stop the government in Firefox’s jurisdiction from bullying them into adding a backdoor. We can assume the bullying is ongoing.

I like to imagine it as having a safe deposit box provided by a local bank. I have the only key and have proven that to be the case. I also store the key at home in another safe which is regularly serviced by bank employees. While they probably don’t abuse their position in the latter to access the former, it would be completely wrong to say they do not have the capability to get at my stuff.

All that aside, I love FF sync and rely on it everyday for work stuff. It is like magic and I’m very grateful for the feature. I am realistic about the NSA’s level of interest in my work calendar and the threat they pose to my day to day life.

dodgerdan · 3 years ago
Then you can’t trust the FF code not to send a copy to their own servers also.
