Does the app work? I don’t mean the gamification: I mean, are you becoming fluent (or even just literate) in the language outside of the app?
dealpete · 3 years ago
It is a good way to get started with a new language, but you won’t make it to fluency. They don’t have enough content for that.

Many years ago (think: 1994) scientists (mainly CS folks) published papers on the web as postscript files. Actually, they were usually on FTP sites, not the web, as almost nobody used the web at the time. I developed a huge aversion to postscript (it was clunky and the renderers weren't great) but the idea that every bit of published science would be freely available on the web seemed completely and totally obvious to me.

When I later became an academic, I learned that when you write a paper and submit it, conditions for publication typically include signing away the copyright to the journal, possibly with a license to distribute a few preprints offline.

My advisor at the time pointed out that he actually modified the contract (changing the terms to retain copyright), signed it and sent it back (no journal ever complained, and all his papers are available as PDFs online).

arxiv is the closest thing to what I dreamt of some decades ago and I'm thrilled that Paul is receiving recognition. Personally, I think arxiv is a better path forward than scihub, entirely due to its "legitimacy". In the future, I will always work to "publish" on arxiv and not put my work in journals (fortunately, I am not in a publish or perish situation).

My only complaint is that I don't particularly like PDF and wish there was an HTML-zip format that could be sent around and the browser did all the rendering work, while the udnerlying data tables are stored in well-defined formats so they can be programatically extracted.

Back when I was doing Math research it was common to submit LateX files to ArXiv. A quick look at some of the Physics papers, though, suggests it may not the case for other fields.

So I'm a mostly self trained low level programmer and found Project Euler is great but there is a level of math knowledge that left me more puzzled on the formulas than actual coding. Is this something I should focus on as someone learning to code, or the other coding puzzle sites with "linked list" type of challenges are just as good.

There's no real need to know so much math for most professional programming jobs. Math problems tend to be over-represented on challenge sites because they are easy to implement.

Actually up to a weight for weight match or even more in the case of lighter humans, a single dog is trivial to defeat in combat unless it is properly trained to never fully engage and only to tear and dash.

If a person reacts aggressively and not trying to escape, a dog is easily defeated. Just have to protect your throat and keep facing the dog. Allow it to grab you on a limb , preferably a hand or arm, and you have control. Humans have three mouths , dogs only one. Force your hand / arm into the dogs mouth and do not pull away. Use the other hand to control the snout and remove the eyes. Use your mouth to destroy the snout and associated bone structure. If you can get your hand into the mouth reach for the lungs and asphyxiate the animal. Two Dogs gets tricky. Three dogs is deadly.

I'm not sure that plunging my arm down its throat and choking it with my fist would be my first instinct if I were attacked by a dog :)

Nice to see this working well on Safari. Web games posted on HN sometimes don’t.

The interesting thing is that US has bigger problems than TikTok right now.

I was amused by this doublespeak:

"To give users more control over their extensions, support for sideloaded extensions will be discontinued."

"doesn't use JavaScript" and "can't work without JavaScript" are two separate issues.

Google, the most popular page on the internet, doesn't force you to use Javascript.

dealpete · 6 years ago
I did some experiments the other day and found to my surprise that Google has by far the best no-Javascript experience of the major search engines. Duck Duck Go could learn a thing or two from them.
