dazhengca commented on Ask HN: Any active COBOL devs here? What are you working on?    · Posted by u/_false

Government. About 25% of my job. No day to day mainframe development, but we do need to update some logic for new policies and regulations.

There’s not much maintenance work. There are very few bugs, as the core applications have been running for decades, most come up with interactions to external services.

Any major development projects are only in service of lower overall COBOL development time, like transitioning some business logic to database updates.

And there is a decommission plan for the mainframe, so plenty of work helping that team.

I don't believe IA itself takes down pages that kiwifarms archives/links to. Rather they get a request to take it down and comply with it (correct me if I'm wrong here). I think IA is actually in a tough spot on this issue because they might be able to be sued eg. for defamation if they don't take down pages with personal info after a request to do so is made. Lastly, I doubt any new leadership would be less harsh on kiwifarms.

There was no illegal content on kiwi farms. Even then, I’d say taking down a single page by request is understandable. However, they surrendered to the mob and chose to stop archiving the entire site. This was to censor any criticism of the people involved, but as a result, we lost all of the other information on the rest of the site as well. It’s clear this organization cannot handle pressure, and is relying on people treating it kindly.

You’re still only holding yourself accountable, which is harder for some than others. If you don’t have friends to study with, maybe some internet strangers could be a motivational alternative.

If you haven’t read about them, you might find evolutionary approaches to depression interesting.

For me personally, these models offer much more explanatory power. We don’t have to always view depression as a mental illness.

It's been suggested the employment is because people are being forced to take on multiple jobs to make ends meet, not because there are more people getting jobs.

Gas affects the prices of nearly everything in the economy so I have no idea how you would conclude it's not a large portion of spending. I work in commodities and we are seeing massive price increases simply due to fuel & freight costs.

They disabled windows update because it is spyware? Are they providing their own filtered update channel??

Ok, so PSA: if you don't want "Spyware" don't use windows. In Forensics, you learn there are many many ways windows tracks what you do, some of which can be disabled but it is all architectures into the OS. If you looked at a specific folder in explorer, that can be proven in court, executed a specific program? At least 4-5 ways come to mind . Take a peek at c:\windows\system32\winevt\logs\ (equivalent of /var/log/) and that's just one place.

I mean the spyware has measurable and valuable security benefits. If you wanna really test your malware dev skills, leave cloud submission turned on Defender and write any basic malware (harmful not just undesirable) and avoid detection for longer than a day. It was very hard when I tried it (for legit purposes).

I bash on Linux because of all its problems (only because I love it and want to see it improve) but if you want privacy, use Linux, the cliche holds true. You can always use windows in vbox+seamless mode for most things or on a separate device if you can afford it.

How would looking at a specific folder in explorer be proven in court?

It's fair play to act like any gov is doing this.

E.G: Microsoft being American (and them being part of PRISM), I just assume the OS has a backdoor for the US gov. Now with Windows 10 heavy telemetry, it's even easier.

I work for a client doing chips for credit cards. Did you know they are now full blown computers that can run a light version of Java (Java Card) ? The company is building their own hardware and software, and just to get to a conference room, you need biometric access + badge + pin code. Pretty sure they send data to my country agencies in some way despite having to trick the banking system to do so for them.

Same from any software, server/cloud hosting or hardware. If it comes from a specific country, this country is most probably using it for intelligence. It doesn't even need to be on a network now, because there is so much interactivity with all devices. And eventually, one will be.

It’s not “fair play” to equate your assumptions and personal conspiracies to thousands of documented cases of state sponsored IP theft.

Why don't they just go to the logical next step and just make metric the standard, the Imperial System (foot etc.) are already defined by the Metric system?

Humorous view on the situation: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hid7EJkwDNk

dazhengca · 4 years ago
Metric is currently the “ preferred system of weights and measures for United States trade and commerce”

https://uscode.house.gov/view.xhtml;jsessionid=8314B6B7A95CC...

As you mentioned, the foot and all other U.S. customary units are based on the International System of Units (SI).
