dawidw commented on Ask HN: What are some homeless shelter innovations?    · Posted by u/codingclaws

We've gone from 20,000 homeless in the 1990s down to about 4,000 in 2023, so it's very impressive. A large part of the reason is that drug use does not disqualify you from recieving benefits.

and maybe that made drug overdose which resulted in decreasing of homeless people?

This is terrible advice. Any fads are. Ketogenic diets are not good for you in any way.

Bad behaviour starts with acknowledgement and the best way to do that is to track what you eat and learn to adapt slowly and develop self discipline. Use a tracker app and set a reasonable daily break even nutritional target and start thinking about what you eat. Slowly substitute better choices in. Eventually you will develop self control.

People want quick fixes but keto just breaks other things.

What is so bad about keto diet?

I had it, everything went fine. Very unpleasant though. If I were doing that again, I'd take 1 or 2 months between eyes in case something go wrong. All in all, I'm very happy with the surgery.
dawidw commented on Ask HN: What supplements do you take?    · Posted by u/rory_isAdonk

Magnesium and Vitamin D - as far as I can tell there is plenty of evidence about the need for supplementation and effectiveness of both.

Currently experimenting with L-theanine to see if it helps me work better.

dawidw · 5 years ago
If you take vitamin D, you should also take vitamin K2MK7.

Do also blood test every 6 weeks of 25ohd to detect if your dose is sufficient. And don't forget to take 10 minutes of Sun while it's in its Zenith to get vitamin D dissolved in water.

- Can I have something to clean input/output ports, please? - programmer asks at a shop. - Sorry? - Lady at the counter doesn't understand. - I meant... eh... toothpaste and toilet paper please...

There are 10 categories of people: those who know what binary system is, and those who don't.

Have you tried playing with your 2 year old
dawidw · 5 years ago
Exactly this! You're watching your kid playing instead of taking part of it. You're missing so much fun. Do simple things - moving and talking teddy bear, making small object disappear in your palm etc. and you'll see how impressive it is for kid and you'll get involved and enjoyed. Try it!

Kids in beds at 20:00 should give you 3-4 hours for yourself.

In spoken Mandarin Chinese you can normally derive the meaning from context but in Classical Chinese (or in fact anything written more formally) it's not necessarily so straightforward.

There is a poem that illustrates it, where each syllable is pronounced exactly the same, /shi/ just with different tones: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lion-Eating_Poet_in_the_Stone_... (施氏食獅史). It goes like that:

« Shī Shì shí shī shǐ »
Shíshì shīshì Shī Shì, shì shī, shì shí shí shī.
Shì shíshí shì shì shì shī.
Shí shí, shì shí shī shì shì.
    [...]
Good luck trying to figure out the meaning without the "written adornments."

I'm curious how the poem with proper pronunciation sounds like.
