I’m not even looking forward to Microsoft teams on Monday.

> get points for registering read books

> little prize you can pick up from the library

I am not convinced that this is really motivating to kids. Don't they have tons' of toys at home an in the library to play with already. Why would they care about tiny shark teeth.

Also i find the whole concept of 'read to get prize' cynical, cheap and manipulative. Don't want to manipulate my own child with these cheap tricks.

Don’t underestimate the power of junk prizes. It’s how McDonald’s has gotten away with selling overpriced kids meals for decades.

My kids love the novelty of garbage prize toys and while I think they are stupid, my kids get weirdly motivated by the promise of a trip to the dollar store.

Nonsense, you could be using Spotify.

I’m going to try giving up on all of them and just growing my local collection monthly instead.

How's this compare to the native macos music app formerly known as itunes?
darthcircuit · a month ago
Anything is better than that dumpster fire. They changed the name but the ui is still straight out of the early 2000s. It’s an exercise in frustration to find the music you’re looking for, and if you subscribe to Apple Music, the radio suggestions rarely match what mood you set.

I was listening to some early 2000s alternative rock today and then randomly in the middle of my radio station it started playing a kids freeze dance song.

The best thing it has going for it is the lossless albums and native airplay casting. I got a free trial, but I’m not going to renew. I’d consider staying if they added native last.fm scrobbling, but even then I’m not sure.

I’m really bummed about the scrobbling because I lost several weeks of not a month of plays because my phone offloaded the scrobbler app and I didn’t notice. The official app for it on Mac says to use one or the other (macOS or iOS) because it will count twice.

If you want a more dedicated game that can be downloaded, check out

https://marbleblastultra.com/

I believe this is a reverse engineered port based on the Xbox 360 version.

I play it on my steamdeck once in a while. I like having native controller support now that I’m getting older.

The thing to understand is your last paragraph: everything big ads does is unsurprisingly focused toward making people into worse versions of themselves. You wouldn't let kids go to a casino or porn site for educational material. Don't let them use youtube either.

It could be that someone happened to post educational videos to the porn site. If so you'd might as well download them while you have the chance, but don't mistake their existence for some indication that that's what the site is for. They're still less than 0.1% of the videos, and you'd need to specifically search for them or be linked to them to find them. Assume you'll need to look elsewhere for educational material. e.g. there are 10s of thousands of results for videos for "Holocaust" on worldcat.

The problem is that YouTube and Google on a whole actively encourage the use of YouTube in schools, home schooling, and education in general. Google workspace for education is free for educational institutions. They also have a curated YouTube kids app with a giant feed of brain rot that they consider to be safe for kids, but only because the content doesn’t show anything graphic or have bad language.

On the other hand, porn services are (generally) actively blocked in educational institutions, so the content, regardless of its educational quality will never be suggested to kids because they are not a target audience. (Not to mention the legal trouble these services would have from actively enticing minors) I doubt we’ll see “PornHub for kids” our RedTube signing a contract with Blippi or Miss Rachel.

This article mentions the piano having electric billows for the suction necessary to operate the piano. I had the opportunity to play a piano similar, but with foot pump billows. It took some doing to keep it going! Although the one I played was quite old and in rough shape. It leaked air, but once it was going it was great fun.

Their faq states that the license is valid for the current version (v1) and not for any future versions. So all they have to do is increase the version number when money is tight.
darthcircuit · 3 months ago
Meh, if they are following the affinity scheme, then a v2 would have a pretty good value add, and is worth it. I paid twice for affinity, and I’m still into the whole suite for less than a few months of creative cloud. Granted, this is one product, but I’d still much prefer a once off and upgrade fee vs a subscription.
