dalmo3 commented on The cost of interrupted work (2023)   blog.oberien.de/2023/11/0... · Posted by u/_vaporwave_

Pair programming exhausts me. When I write code alone, I usually have breaks every 20 minutes or so. I go for a short walk after 1h. I look out of the window every now and then. Sometimes I put some background music. When I’m doin pair programming I’m supposed to: think out loud, look at the screen 100% of the time, sit in front of the screen for at least 1h straight. Think at the same speed than my peer.

Not worth it for me. Don’t care if we together are more productive; I couldn’t care less. I care more about my eye sight, and sitting routine.

I can sit and program 16 hours straight without breaks.

I cannot talk to someone else for an hour without feeling exhausted and needing a long break afterwards.

Talking to someone else while programming? It's revving up my brain into the red zone. Sometimes the adrenaline boost does its job but I do pay the price.

> The enemy is the static card. It always has the same front, formatting, and font. After enough reps I would latch on to little cues that are irrelevant to the meaning of the card, meaning I would skip the very important step of thinking deeply about the content. A fairly common occurrence was that a word in the sentence would remind me about the meaning of the sentence, giving away the answer to the target word, which is quite different from piecing together the meaning of the target word in a brand new sentence.

Interestingly, that's the "trick" behind a lot of the seemingly magic skill of geo guessers. The best players have played so much, that they now "see" things that a regular person wouldn't even consider to look for, like the camera quality, what year the car was from, and so they narrow down the possible countries by those aspects, before even looking at the "picture".

The one time I tried Anki u realised I started recalling the answers based on the shape of the words lay out on the card without necessarily reading them.
dalmo3 commented on One weird trick to making Claude Code palatable to use    · Posted by u/JSR_FDED

The way I interact with Claude involves referencing pop culture stuff that I enjoy so that it responds with something that I find mildly interesting to read.

At the end of the prompt:

Startrek stuff - Per Jean Luc Picard's orders, engage. - In the immortal words of a great science officer, the needs of this codebase outweighs the needs of few. - Code hard and prosper - You are borg. We are borg. (followed by a simple "status report" prompt after it's done with it's glazing)

Starwars - May the code be with you. - Code or code not, there is no try.

You probably get the idea.

As for the botched code problem. I surprisingly have less issues with Claude than I do GPT. I've gotta ask, do you have any deep knowledge in coding? How are your instructions?

The most fun I had with Claude was when I told it "You are Ziltoid, The Omniscient."

at this point i think we ought to start having a tag in the submission title for when the submission is (primarily) llm-generated, like we do for video/pdf/nsfw
dalmo3 · a month ago
Too late. YouTube music channels already began explicitly tagging videos as "Human made music".

I'm sure somebody is going to point out that it was written by AI and is a toy, therefore it can be maintained by AI. I share your desire to have human maintainable code, but I imagine one of the goals of AI written code is to allow the AI to manage it, end-to-end.

Another reason to favour shorter code.

I, too, had this view. It was flecked with blue. Like a linen sheet it had those lines.

I had to zoom in to double-check the blue dots weren't there!

The Samsung S10e was probably peak Android. Small, high-end, SD card and 3.5mm jack.

There are some decent small Android phones, if you're willing to buy non-mainstream brands. Take a look at:

I've just bought a used s10e in pristine condition for $200. It's glorious.

Re: TFA, I'm all for filling the small phone niche, but there's no way I'm paying a cent over $500 for a phone with no resale value.

None of this explains why it's just impossible to get small phones.

You have people who want them unusably large and people who want them to fit in your hand. The solution in every other market is that products are manufactured to fit both sets of needs. You don't see pants coming in one size with the advice "wear a belt".

What's going on?

dalmo3 · a month ago
I agree with the sentiment, but pants is a very funny example.

Every manufacturer seems to think people are either tall and fat or short and slim. I'm tall and my only alternative is literally to wear a belt.
