cvhashim04 commented on I'm puzzled how anyone trusts ChatGPT for code    · Posted by u/chrisjj

ChatGPT, when I was forced to use it often got confused which is the bigger number, 2 or 3. I don't care how many lines of bottom of the barrel code it can throw up, I'm not using any of it. AI generated spaghetti debt.

LLM's will turn out to be nothing more than another glittering gadget. Except this one will obliterate any coding skills of future generations. Not to mention the gigatons of AI generated garbage text, images and music that it's filling the world with. What a waste.

I think you're in for a rude awakening. The software engineering field will be an unrecognizable landscape 5-10 years from now and you'll be looked at like the guy who codes in text edit with no ide if you arent using some form of an AI to generate code -- notice I said generate, coding from scratch will be a thing of the past also.

Is there room to up the pay?

Bolting after two months suggests something of concern.

cvhashim04 · 2 years ago
Probably an awful messy code base and the new hire couldn’t deal with that headache.

Wow this is about how much the average radiologist makes after 10 years of postgraduate studies

Brb going to radiology school, given how finished tech is

That advantage is almost immediately overwritten by the fact that most of Target's inventory is usually of no better quality than the comingled things on Amazon, with a higher price tag and custom label. I almost prefer to shop either on Temu/AliExpress now because at least they are up front about everything being cheap crap. If I want quality, I'll buy from a manufacturers website.

Curious what do you buy from temu.

I’ve always wondered who’s buying 2 dollar shoes

That's what I thought for Walmart+, but here I am 3 months into a free membership having used it once. Nearly all items I've compared are more expensive than Amazon and more expensive than in store. The nail in the coffin is their search is awful and half the items don't qualify for the shipping benefits you're paying for! They're more than making their money back because people easily miss $1-2 differentials on essentials that add up to $40 on your grocery bill.

Amazon quality control is very bad. Don’t mind paying a little extra at Best Buy, Target, or Walmart if I could avoid poor QC.

LLMs can only reproduce what has been done before. For many tasks like web programming it can do a lot of what you need because it was trained on that data many times over. When you need to use a concept or knowledge that's fairly rare or oblique it will fail. That's pretty much what Carmack is saying--problem solving will continue to be a needed skill.

Unless you’re at the cutting edge of your field, the rest of us are doing work that has been proven and solved by someone else.
