cvalka commented on The child-like role of dogs in Western societies   econtent.hogrefe.com/doi/... · Posted by u/IndrekR

When they aren't abused, nearly all dogs are extremely loyal and affectionate. When they see you after even the shortest of absences, they act like a kid on Christmas morning just because you're there. They understand basic feelings and will try to comfort you when you're not feeling great. Most are patient to a fault with children. Many if not most will act as guardians, protecting you from threats without hesitation, even in cases where it is obvious it is likely to cost their lives.

We absolutely don't deserve them.

With no cognitive dissonance, I can also recognize that some dogs can be dangerous, and in extreme cases, need to be put down. However, I would point out that the vast majority of misbehaved dogs can and should be trained out of their bad behavior, so it's nearly always their owners' responsibilities.

You are simply delusional with your dog fetish.
cvalka commented on BorgBackup 2 has no server-side append-only anymore   github.com/borgbackup/bor... · Posted by u/jaegerma

For anyone looking to migrate off borg because of this, append-only is available in restic, but only with the rest-server backend:

https://github.com/restic/restic

https://github.com/restic/rest-server

which has to be started with --append-only. I use this systemd unit:

  [Unit]
  After=network-online.target

  [Install]
  WantedBy=multi-user.target

  [Service]
  ExecStart=/usr/local/bin/rest-server --path /mnt/backups --append-only --private-repos
  WorkingDirectory=/mnt/backups
  User=restic
  Restart=on-failure
  ProtectSystem=strict
  ReadWritePaths=/mnt/backups
I also use nginx with HTTPS + HTTP authentication in front of it, with a separate username/password combination for each server. This makes rest-server completely inaccessible to the rest of the internet and you don't have to trust it to be properly protected against being hammered by malicious traffic.

Been using this for about five years, it saved my bacon a few times, no problems so far.

Use rustic instead of restic!

I presume your experience is limited to the parochial world of American Evangelical Christianity, or perhaps anecdotal, informed by your experience with intellectually unsophisticated people. Dawkins and his ilk used to love to pick on these poor people, because it’s so easy, even for a philosophical and theological rube like Dawkins.

But you are certainly not describing the intellectual muscle and heft of the Catholic tradition. You don’t stand a chance.

Materialists, by contrast, either never realize the incoherence of their naive position, or double down, consigning themselves to ever greater absurdities (yes, I am looking at you, eliminativism).

Get off your high horse. The muscle and heft of the Catholic tradition? LOL

If Bankman-Fried does somehow get a pardon, I will be amazed that the bitter debate on HN about whether he would get off scott free or would be thrown in prison somehow resulted in both parties being correct.

Unless Trump is a complete moron, SBF will not be pardoned.

You keep waddling into my comments specifically to taut your mistaken notion of “the invisible hand of the free market”, and it’s not welcome - mostly because it’s demonstrably not true, and also because you have a history of moving goal posts when presented this data that knocks down your assertions.

Kindly go away and chew on this while you do so: if everyone started their own billion-dollar business like you claim it’s possible (and plausible) to do, then that means the cumulative wealth available out there is literally infinite and currency has no relevant function.

So for currency to be worthwhile and billion-dollar businesses to be viable, there must be finite resources. Furthermore, since humans cannot be trusted to act in the interest of society, then regulation is needed to ensure equitable outcomes and minimize harms.

Now go away and leave me be.

Your comment is a word salad. You misunderstand basic economics and this is a public forum where other people can reply to your comments.
