Looks just like mine.

But for $30, you can't beat this:

creeble commented on Loose wire leads to blackout, contact with Francis Scott Key bridge   ntsb.gov:443/news/press-r... · Posted by u/DamnInteresting

I strongly recommend watching/reading the entire report, or the summary by Sal Mercogliano of What's Going On In Shipping [0].

Yes, the loose wire was the immediate cause, but there was far more going wrong here. For example:

- The transformer switchover was set to manual rather than automatic, so it didn't automatically fail over to the backup transformer.

- The crew did not routinely train transformer switchover procedures.

- The two generators were both using a single non-redundant fuel pump (which was never intended to supply fuel to the generators!), which did not automatically restart after power was restored.

- The main engine automatically shut down when the primary coolant pump lost power, rather than using an emergency water supply or letting it overheat.

- The backup generator did not come online in time.

It's a classic Swiss Cheese model. A lot of things had to go wrong for this accident to happen. Focusing on that one wire isn't going to solve all the other issues. Wires, just like all other parts, will occasionally fail. One wire failure should never have caused an incident of this magnitude. Sure, there should probably be slightly better procedures for checking the wiring, but next time it'll be a failed sensor, actuator, or controller board.

If we don't focus on providing and ensuring a defense-in-depth, we will sooner or later see another incident like this.

I watched Sal's video yesterday, great summary.

So much complexity, plenty of redundancy, but not enough adherence to important rules.

Tangential question: Does anyone know of a basic large-signal equation for a triode (or any other vacuum tube type) like the simplified Ebers-Moll equation for BJTs or the square law equations for the linear and saturation regions of a MOSFET? It would really help my understanding, but whenever I google it I only see academic papers, like it's a weird thing to search for.
creeble · a month ago
If I understand them correctly, Ebers-Moll equations are based on the exponential relationship between voltage and current in a BJT.

But tubes aren't current amplifiers, they're voltage amplifiers, like FETs.

You can look at the "characteristics curves" of tubes (plate curves and transconductance curves), which tell the story of current against plate-to-cathode voltages for fixed grid voltages.

Rob Robinette is a great guitar-amp resource; knows just about everything about Fender amps in particular. He has many mods to many common/not-so-common Fenders.

Just his list of 5E3 mods (Fender Deluxe) is awesome:

Agreed!

There are probably broad categories that I might find myself using, but for my own core collection of music (deeper than it is wide, mostly), it barely matters.

TP-Link is far from being a small vendor, though.

I think he has it backwards: Easy for a small vendor, very hard for a large one.

It probably varies between EV manufacturers, but my Tesla Model 3 has been the easiest vehicle to self maintain that I’ve owned yet. Mostly due to how little maintenance there is, but also because of the completely open and online factory service manuals and parts manuals.

It’s ridiculously easy to look up a part number, order it online from wherever is most convenient, and follow the steps in the manual to replace it.

creeble · 6 months ago
I had the opposite experience with my 10-year-old Model S.

Most parts could only come from Tesla, including the Bilstein struts (a part number Bilstein refuses to sell to anyone but Tesla). $900 per corner.

USB port between the console? $400. I found a used one on eBay, fortunately.

When the wheel rotation sensor receiver went bad, it cost $2500 for them to install and reprogram the replacement, because they "upgraded" to a different mfr. When that one started to go bad (water ingress, which wasn't cured by the new part), I sold the car and said good riddance.

> According to Qurium, TacoLoco is a traffic monetization network that uses deceptive tactics to trick Internet users into enabling "push notifications," a cross-platform browser standard that allows websites to show pop-up messages which appear outside of the browser.

An elderly relative of mine was hit by this a couple years back: his computer's desktop was constantly being spammed with messages on startup, and there was no simple way to turn them all off. It turned out that they were all notifications from web workers that he'd inadvertently allowed at some point prior. (I set his browser to auto-deny notifications so it wouldn't happen again.)

Elderly neighbor for me. Quite insipid; it took me a few minutes to realize that they were browser-based when I first got to the computer.

For music, they hear about 10dB is half/twice as loud.

Exactly. There's no way +3dB is perceptibly twice as loud. That's easy to test for yourself. +10dB is roughly twice as loud.
creeble · 7 months ago
The BBC used to teach +6dB for twice as loud for music sources, but they've always been a bit conservative.
