I also used yabai for this purpose but found a solution that doesn’t require messing with security: https://www.boronine.com/2025/02/09/Instant-Workspace-Switch...

> Using native functionality, you have the option of a seizure-inducing sliding animation or an equally time-wasting fade

Amen.

I tried switching to Aerospace, but it would become visibly laggy when connected to an external display and switching a screen that had Zed open for some reason. So I've switched back to Yabai :(

> And most important, instant workspace navigation. The reason why I was upset with Apple: with the latest update, Yabai didn’t work flawlessly anymore

I just wish Apple would let us have instant workspace navigation. It is pretty much the only reason why I wrestle with getting Yabai working on every major OS update. There is “reduced animation” setting but it has a short fade in-and-out animation and it drives me crazy.

creakingstairs commented on I used to know how to write in Japanese   aethermug.com/posts/i-use... · Posted by u/mrcgnc

When learning Japanese, I purposely chose to _not_ learn how to write any of it by hand. As the author notes, writing (by hand) is in fact a separate skill from reading. So I decided I would not invest my limited time, motivation, or brain space to writing.

Overall it's been a successful approach, and I recommend it to new learners unless they have a particular interest in being able to write by hand or they feel strongly that writing the characters helps them remember them.

It's only rarely that I have to write anything other than my own name in Japanese. I've practiced my address but writing it in English is fine in 99% of situations. Being able to write properly would save a little embarrassment, but I still believe my language learning time would have a much higher ROI in other areas.

I’ve taken your approach as well but I did notice that I retain Kanjis that I learn to write significantly more than ones I can just read. But memorising all the Kanjis is a bother.

I found the sweet spot to be writing on a scratch pad as I go through Anki. And not particularly worry about getting writing right too much. Sometimes I’d be confused in my head but my muscle memory would kick in and automatically write the kanji!

I bogged me that it says that he spend loads of time upfront planning but not with cursor. You can do the same with cursor, and on my experience, they are about the same. When they reach certain level of complexity of a medium sized project they start messing up.

I agree. It’s just not a fair comparison. But then the article is written by Kino with the author “sprinkling in” sentences, so I guess I can’t really expect much.

As someone who absolutely loves to "be weird", I often wish the world was so much friendlier to folks like this (other than in a token manner).

Is it just me or do I feel like the society is way more accepting nowadays? I had to pretty much hide who I was during school due to fear of bullying/ not fitting in but most kids these days seem to be able to be themselves in many ways. I agree we can be friendlier though!

AI for billing or other administrative tasks could be a big cost saver…
You’d hope so, but doubtful. More likely it’ll be health care providers using “AI”s to scheme how to charge as much as possible, and insurers using “AI” to deny claims.

YMMV

I switched from Mac to WIN a few years ago, because maintaining MB Pros became a nightmare, after having had six burned mainboards (with Macbook Pro devices each) within 3 years. I had definitely enough. Happy my former employer had to shell out the money for repairs/replacements. But each time getting back into a workable state with my backups still took north of two days.

And while for my day job I still need to use Windows, for my freelance business I am using Linux for quite a while now. Without any maintenance except regular updates (like with any OS out there). There is exactly nothing I am missing in terms of tools/software (for my line of work), while I am also benefitting from better performance, longer battery life and overall a smoother user experience.

Not going back anytime soon.

Can’t say I blame you after such an experience. To give another data point, I don’t think I’ve ever had any of my MacBooks fail. My old ones are still happily being used by my in-laws.

That being said, I am eyeing up Framework for next laptop.

This is gonna sound like an old man yell at clouds post but...

I also remember university being great. I built a compiler, a toy OS and interfaced with GPS.

But a few years ago I was invited to teach on another university and I was very disappointed. The curriculum was basically a modern bootcamp stretched over a few years with a lot of unrelated classes sprinkled in. (EDIT: I just checked it and: lots of business, management, humanities, chemistry, environment, entrepreneurship... and one e-sports class?).

Almost no fundamentals, except for an algorithms class, almost straight to React and a few backend frameworks that were popular in the startups in the area.

creakingstairs · a month ago
Were you teaching for a software engineering degree or a comp sci degree? Former is more focused on practical skills that are more “useful”, hence all those cross-discipline courses.

I’d argue that the core comp sci skill is more useful than learning how to use React or whatever. But I guess I’m another old man yelling at cloud.

What's the advantage of seeing an original piece of art over a serviceable replica? Especially in the case where the "original" is a print, one of dozens.

Obviously "serviceable" is doing a lot of heavy lifting here, a replica might simply not be very good, might not capture some vital characteristic of the thing which makes it a great work.

But otherwise, it's basically that the knowledge of how important and significant this work is puts the viewer in a more receptive frame of mind, right?

To be clear, that's not nothing. I of course know firsthand how much that affects the impact of a painting, museums and galleries care a lot about how they display their collection. But is that it?

creakingstairs · 2 months ago
I agree with you that replicas can be great.

Last year, I went to Otsuka museum of art[1] where they have life-size replicas of famous paintings (including the Sistine chapel), and it was great.

Before going, I was weirdly hung up about going to somewhere to see "replicas" instead of the real thing. But once I got there, I loved every second of it. All the artworks were replicated with careful detail in life size, so I felt like I wasn't missing much. In fact, I felt like I was enjoying it more! There were no crowds. I could get as close to the artworks as I wanted to. The lighting was great, since they didn't have to worry about damaging the paints. It was more engaging for the kids as they could free touch some of the replicated potteries etc.

It is a bit out of the way, but I'd highly recommend anyone going to Japan to check out that museum and maybe the onaruto bridge [2] on the way

i18n and l10n are something that I have seen a company done right. It is easy developer to assume:

If your IP is coming from country X, you must want the content to be served in language X.

No, there are tourist from country Z, long term resident who prefer language A and people from country X want to learn language B.

- If your browser Accept-Language say X,Y, then you must want all the content to be served in X.

No, I want my search result to be predominantly in X, but when I search for things about Y, show me language Y, and when I search for this band from country Z, please show me in language X.

As a hongkonger (zh_hk + en_gb), living in Singapore (zh_cn + en?), following JPOP. This is the daily fight I have with browser.

I would rather all application, including web app just give me the option to choose and say, interface language, english, content language, follow origin.

Ah yes as a Korean living in Japan with locale set to English, this truly is a daily fight.

> I would rather all application, including web app just give me the option to choose

I've left websites for other competitors because they wouldn't have a button to change language.
