corentin88 commented on Why does AI feel so different?   blog.nilenso.com/blog/202... · Posted by u/ath_ray

Go to Google Search and literally ask "How do steam engines work?", and an AI-generated answer is exactly what it will show you, along with a Wikipedia link/excerpt followed by an endless list of links to clickfarms with lede talking about steam engines in general terms to lure you onto their ad-cluttered pages (btw, Duck Duck Go/Bing is just the same).

Shouldn't you rather say "go to Wikipedia straight", or push for Wikipedia to improve their search with all their money already? Isn't a choice of using local open-weight LLMs not actually progress over "googling" and Google's rotten algorithms, or even freaking YouTube and their even worse ad feeds?

So what's your point (I'm tempted to insert "boomer" here)?

It’s one thing to provide hints of a response (10 blue links) and the response (AI).

Too much JavaScript for me. Why not offering something as simple as `<a href="…" rel="prefetch">`

I'm similar but my ratio of prototypes to launching is higher. I find it helps to pace yourself, it increases the chance of finishing exponentially. But the most important things is good scoping and resisting gesture creep. After 35+ years I'm now really good at both. My list of projects is at https://www.gingerbeardman.com and details of my 2023, the year one of my projects got Game Of The Year, are at https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=39636937

You built emojipedia? I’m impressed.

By the way the link is broken on your website.

On the YouTube embed aspect, using a component can take lots of time and efforts.

Just sharing another approach where you keep the YouTube embed iframe, but replace the domain "youtube.com" by this specific domain "embedlite.com". It loads only the thumbnail of the video and when someone clicks on it, it loads the full YouTube player.

More info: https://www.embedlite.com

OP here. YouTube embed iframe is a nightmare in terms of performance. Almost 1MB per video embedded. That’s insane!

We tried different techniques to improve this and ended up building an (open source) solution that’s dead-simple.

While true, the world doesn't end in 2025. While I would also agree that big financial benefits from agents to companies appear unlikely to arrive this year (and the title specifically mentions 2025) I would bet on agents becoming a disruptive technology in the next 5-10 years. My 2c.

Why this timeline? What’s missing today that would make it possible in 5-10 years?
