citywide-fondue commented on Show HN: Intuitive – A Rust crate for writing declarative TUIs   docs.rs/intuitive/latest/... · Posted by u/enricozb

I've written a few TUIs in Rust, and the amount of code needed for the UI components always felt excessive. For a while, I had been toying with the idea of being able to write components in a SwiftUI-like DSL and have state managed like React does with hooks. Intuitive is the result of that frustration and desire.

Right now it's in between a proof-of-concept and an alpha version of the crate. I'm in the process of re-writing one of my TUI apps using Intuitive, and so far it has proven itself as a way to greatly reduce the amount of code necessary for a TUI.

I would be grateful for any feedback on the idea, the design, and/or the implementation. I hope it's well-received!

Wow, this looks cool! How is use_state() implemented?

I believe, after survival, the #1 human driver is prestige. It is amazing how immediate it manifests. People moments after surviving imminent death will jockey for positions of influence with their saviors. It is baked into the human psyche, and as long as we ignore this Orwellian Driver of Human Personalities, we are doomed to repeating civilization wide failures.

Is there a specific example you are referring to re: “ People moments after surviving imminent death will jockey for positions of influence with their saviors”?

I attended Columbia University’s College of Physicians and Surgeons in the late seventies and early eighties, and two groups who stood out were the Bard Hall Players and Columbia University Marching Band. They were made up of talented, creative and hilariously irreverent students. Come on, has the administration lost the ability to laugh? Who wrote Plato’s Republic? is pure gold just as Who’s buried in Grant’s tomb?

What are the two pieces you reference?

"Only 10 percent of California's 7 million plus homeowners have earthquake insurance – and the number has dropped by more than half since the deadly quake" (2014)

You can get an estimate for an earthquake insurance policy with the California Earthquake Authority.

I felt this (near Caltech, Pasadena). I spent the entire duration trying to figure out what was shaking my desk.

I hope this doesn't trigger anything larger. Does anybody know if this was close enough to the fault line to possibly affect anything?

EDIT: I see they have updated the article to a 1 in 20 chance.

10 minutes a day is all you really need to get started. There is basically no way one can reasonably convince themselves that they don’t have 10 minutes to spare per day.
cgoecknerwald · 7 years ago
Well, procrastination can be pretty irrational, especially when combined with strong emotions.
