I wish there was something where I could transcribe iPhone voice memos to text.

I would pay for an app that did this.

Google has an app called live transcribe on Android but there's no iPhone version

This is an unaffiliated version looks like https://apps.apple.com/us/app/live-transcribe/id1471473738

I know this topic is important in substance and the thing I'm about to say is an aesthetic issue, but as an American watching this unfold I have admired the Brits for the sense of heart that still seems to be present in their politics.

I'm referring to the parliamentary sessions in which, even though they're savagely roasting each other, they're doing in a way that feels somehow good-hearted and doesn't lay bare the naked resentment and hatred that seems to be all we have left in the USA.

Also, less amusing but still inspiring, has been articulate criticism from politicians and pundits who seem to actually care about the thing they're talking about; on this side of the Atlantic, it's easy to get the sense that anyone in front of a camera has a pile of talking points on a set of index cards in their lap that they pull out to memorize during commercial breaks.

Charles Walker, giving an impromptu interview, seems to care about a thing: https://youtu.be/Dimw572twfk

Could it have anything to do with the fact that the UK is a much older democracy ? ( the first English parliament was called in 1295 )

Yeah. What I’d really like is proposals/discussion around intrastellar travel infrastructure like this. Park sources of light and coms at certain key locations around the solar system to enable faster traffic. Maybe hollow out some larger asteroids for habitats.

as far as comms goes - nothing can speed it up - but yes the idea of using relays makes comms more reliable/repairable

> “and the data they produce will be sent back to Earth“

That's where my optimism limiters were triggered: sending something in the general direction of earth is all nice and well, but receiving that signal, sent from the confines of a "DVD sized" emitter, against the backdrop of a nearby star? They should try to find a way to harness optimism for propulsion...

cee_el123 · 3 years ago
perhaps that can be overcome by a train/succession of such probes relaying the signals over shorter distances ?

Wow if these were "classic" mistakes when this was written in 1996, they're positively antique now. We've made so much progress in being able to build more complex things and yet we're still humans often making similar mistakes again and again. Software is hard.

Software is hard but more specifically it's human behavior - coordination and communication between contributors and teams to be exact

Cunningham’s July 2018 Medium post about his experience went viral — and soon afterward, Airbnb responded to apologize and reinstate his account. “You were removed after we received a report alleging inappropriate behavior in an Airbnb listing. Upon further review, we determined that removal was not required based on this report. We hope you give us another try and again, we apologize for any inconvenience,” a representative said in an email seen by MarketWatch.
