Prosecuting someone for not having a strong enough password is beyond ridiculous. Your ideal world sounds like a black mirror episode.

How would you feel if a bank used a screen door to access their vault? Protecting other people's info comes with responsibility.

The referenced reply is dull. It's very pretentious but just reiterates common knowledge, it doesn't convey any useful information.

For example I wish someone told me about the existence of Miele kitchen equipment before I accidentally rented an apartment of a well-to-do woman. She renovated it for herself but then rented out when circumstances changed.

Similarly it took me a long time to realize just how much better the veneer wood furniture and doors are compared to laminated chipwood. Price is 3-4 times higher but it lasts 5-10 times longer and is much more pleasant to use. Unfortunately you need years to notice such long-term differences, unless someone tells you.

And I'm basically learning to be lower-middle class here. I'm sure there are similar things to know in higher stratas and I'm unlikely to live long enough to find out naturally even if I happen to get the money somehow.

The only Miele you want is the vacuum cleaner.

Man I wish I could get insurance like that. "Accountability insurance"

You were responsibile for something, say, child care, and you just decided to go for beer and leave the child with an AI. The house burns down, but because you had insurance you are not responsible. You just head along to your next child care job and don't too much worry about it.

Not sure insurance will take the rap for criminal negligence.

Why are you even seeing ads on web pages? Don’t you use an ad blocker?

Not GP, but some of us have family members who refuse to even consider using uBlock Origin, for reasons they're never quite able to articulate.

Crypto-hieroglyphic writing is a real thing: https://www.britannica.com/topic/hieroglyphic-writing/Crypto...

Such writing would give non-standard meanings to signs, or drawn them in non-standard ways, or use entirely invented signs. It would be a puzzle to work out the meaning, and I imagine most people who weren't very literate would be stumped. They certainly stumped egyptologists for a while when the first examples were discovered.

I believe enciphered hieroglyphics were covered by David Kahn in The Codebreakers. If memory serves, literate people wouldn't have too much difficulty solving them. The idea was the the plaintext would seem more significant to the reader/codebreaker after they labored for a few hours or a few days working it out. The labor required would add emphasis to what was being communicated.

The worst part of Pluto's demotion from "planet" to "dwarf planet" is the sheer disrespect toward what's arguably the most interesting planet that's not Earth.

The second-worst part is that we can't call this hypothetical trans-Plutonian planet "Planet X" anymore.

Planet X is Eris.
