Wasn't aware that both old and new execs have Sales / Marketing background vs. Product / Engineering.

This is a stereotype bad signal but AWS has demonstrated otherwise (besides missing the AI boat, whose endgame is not clear yet.)

Garman was one of the first PMs at AWS. He was sent over to lead Sales/Marketing relatively recently to get demand side experience presumably in preparation to take over as CEO.

I wonder if part of the motivation in releasing this is legitimizing the Flipper as a hobby/development product and not a tool for crime, as it’s been depicted in media recently. I personally appreciate the Flipper in that it’s shedding light on how insecure common RF technology is.

Off topic: I hadn't heard of reason.com before, and this article seemed like decent reporting so I looked around a bit for more. Then I found an article affecting my state on their front page, and oh boy it is chalk full of so much spin and loaded adjectives, it's such an obvious example of an opinion piece masquerading as journalism. Very disappointing.

It looks like I would need the following for this to work:

To use iMessage Contact Key Verification, you’ll need: iOS 17.2, watchOS 9.2 and macOS 14.2 on all devices where you’ve signed in to iMessage with your Apple ID

Unfortunately my work iMac isn’t on Sonoma, it’s on Monterey. I suppose I could log out on that machine, but still, a bit of a shame older versions aren’t supported.

Am I reading the requirements correctly? Does this mean that for all devices to work with CKV, then all OS’s need to be updated, or will it not do CKV on any devices if even one device is not supported?

captainoats · 2 years ago
Yep, I have an 2017 iMac at home and won’t be able to use CKV unless a sign out of iCloud on that machine.

The Thompson Center has been dilapidated for a long time and used a tremendous amount of energy to heat and cool. It needs to be replaced.

Isn't the transcoder just ffmpeg ? From as far back as I can remember, plex does not work well over an internet link. It will play a stream, but as soon as you try to seek, skip, resume, etc. it throws its hands up. Given enough bandwidth and reasonable latency, you expect the experience to mirror youtube or netflix, but plex is not even close.
captainoats · 2 years ago
The issue you mentioned is why I can’t use the Plex client for playback. I use Infuse which handles seeking fine so clearly it’s not an unsolvable problem. Crazy Plex hasn’t addressed it.

I’d say doc should be expecting a visit from the FDA shortly about his unlicensed medical device.
captainoats · 2 years ago
The FDA regulates bringing a device to market commercially, doctors can use regular COTS software.

Separation of church and state is about the government not enforcing or favoring one religion over others. I'm having trouble seeing the analogy applied to separation of big tech and big government. The separation of big tech and big government is a different categorical issue. But does this issue actually exist? At the end of the day, the government holds all the power over big tech as it should. And you do have a chance to say how your government should operate.

I think OP is referencing how the royal/political class and clergy shared power in a sort of adversarial relationship in classical European society.

They also kill rivers and lakes. In my country, a massive move to dairying has corresponded to a massive increase in eutrophication.

But that move to dairy from beef or sheep farming wasn't to feed the world, it was just to sell milk powder to China.

An underappreciated side effect of the second amendment is that an awful lot of Americans have an extremely effective means of "assisted dying" at their fingertips. It will be interesting to see how the public debate handles that fact, as currently they are considered gun deaths (bad) rather than morally necessary access to assisted death (in the near future, good?).

Lots of peoples reaction to this is that suicide is always bad when done by firearm because it’s gruesome or frightening to them. I would ask that these people introspect and ask if their own emotions and biases are leading them to this conclusion. If the goal here is to let people live and die on their own terms, then this seems like a particularly hypocritical take. I think to many, suicide by gun is favorable as more immediate, private, and time and place are entirely within your own control.
