Why do these researchers get to benefit from patents and other intellectual property generated using the public money? The IP generated here should immediately enter the public domain.

What are the implications of this? No more centralized store of vulnerability information?

Honest question: how many public school districts don't have a Teachers Union? My understanding is that it's close to none, and private and charter schools are the only ones without unions. A quick google search isn't returning a conclusive answer though.

bytematic commented on I'm taking a year off college to upskill/work. Advice?    · Posted by u/doublemint2202

The idea is to get an internship in Europe in the middle of college to upskill. In HS I didn't learn as much CS as I could've, unfortunately this puts my programming skills "behind."
bytematic · 3 years ago
It does not take more than a couple years to get fine enough programming skills to make it in the professional world. Do not consider yourself behind, I highly doubt any significant % of engineers knew what cs was when they were in high school. Focusing on personal projects, interning, freelancing while in school will put you waaay ahead of your peers.

For most of my generation Punk does not mean how you look but is a mindset. The mindset is 2 fold, first of all it means "I can do anything unless it showed that I failed a particular thing, then it means I cannot do that one thing but still can do anything else", and also it means, "If needed I will do it myself". So for me he is still punk and I think he thinks that himself too.

I quite like the idea that punk was about annihilation, if you found out the missiles were on their way, you’d probably start saying what you always wanted to.

From Legs McNeil of Punk Magazine: "This wonderful vital force that was articulated by the music was really about corrupting every form—it was about advocating kids to not wait to be told what to do, but make life up for themselves, it was about trying to get people to use their imaginations again, it was about not being perfect, it was about saying it was okay to be amateurish and funny, that real creativity came out of making a mess, it was about working with what you got in front of you and turning everything embarrassing, awful, and stupid in your life to your advantage."

Well, it really rather isn't. Punks aren't renowned for musicianship and appreciation of finely crafted instruments. Most 'punks' would have little idea of what to do with a Brian May model Gretsch. But making your own guitar is rather garage, if you'd asked me, as garages are often workshops.

Punk is very strongly connected with DIY. Often times you had to do it yourself because money is scarce: printing your own shirts, pressing records, setting up shows, etc.

Knowing that HN is generally against it, I say it anyway: I recommend religion and religious teachings which address this and many other daily worldly issues perfectly. Christianity and Judaism both have excellent resources. Religious scholars have actually been the best psychologists but are generally dismissed by non-believers.

Edit: for those asking for specific recommendations. It’s always best to find your own path according to the religion of your parents and environment. However, I can suggest that you investigate Mussar and look up some books in English.

“Musar is a path of contemplative practices and exercises that have evolved over the past thousand years to help an individual soul to pinpoint and then to break through the barriers that surround and obstruct the flow of inner light in our lives. Musar is a treasury of techniques and understandings that offers immensely valuable guidance for the journey of our lives.... The goal of Musar practice is to release the light of holiness that lives within the soul. The roots of all of our thoughts and actions can be traced to the depths of the soul, beyond the reach of the light of consciousness, and so the methods Musar provides include meditations, guided contemplations, exercises and chants that are all intended to penetrate down to the darkness of the subconscious, to bring about change right at the root of our nature.“
