The "UniFi Protect" NVR server can ingest a feed from a 3rd party ONVIF camera, but I don't believe Ubiquiti's own cameras can expose themselves over ONVIF. Their camera's still seemed locked to their NVR software. (Though they do have a very basic managment interface hosted on themselves, and you can ssh into them)

Ubiquiti NVR does not support ONVIF on-camera detected motion events.

There are a bunch of new offerings in the wireless access point but as soon as you need more than 8 or 12 switch ports, it's basically down to microtik and UniFi unless you have enterprise budgets.

Zyxel GS1900 are quite nice managed switches for reasonable money.

I’ve experienced this too and it’s not just no-names. I have a wireless gaming keyboard from SteelSeries, certainly a very legit brand. I lost the original USB-C cord. Tried every USB-C cord I could find, and they power the keyboard and charge it to exactly 1%, but no more.

Found plenty of people online with the same issue but no resolution.

Finally just paid the $25 to get the OEM SteelSeries replacement cable and it charges fully again. wtf… I guess the replacement cable was USB-A to C and I’ve only tried USB-C to C cables?

Actually, in most situations with this problem it is possible to solder 2 additional resistors inside the offending USB-C device. I have done that on a flashlight and can confirm that it fixed the problem.
buccal commented on A CarFax for Used PCs; Hewlett Packard wants to give old laptops new life   spectrum.ieee.org/carmax-... · Posted by u/rubenbe

This is likely just something that corporate users would care about. Companies often lease PCs from IT service providers rather than own and maintain their own hardware. The owner of the hardware now has a metric they can point to for how "usable" a machine is after the initial lease. As a customer, I may not want to rent laptops that have been through who knows what sort of wear and tear no matter how cheap but if the owner can now show me actual data saying how used the laptop is, I may feel more comfortable paying less for used. It's like the odometer on a car, I'd never buy a used car that didn't have an odometer (even if such a thing existed). But with an odometer, I can get a general idea of how much use a car has had despite the age. Only a year old with 30k miles? Hell no. Three years old with only 10k? That car might as well be new.

I'm assuming since it writes to a vendor-reserved sector, replacing it would make the whole thing moot. The rental company wants to retain that data because it makes a used PC more valuable. Since the corporate renter doesn't own the PC, they would only be allowed to wipe the SSD (excluding this section), not remove and destroy it.

"Odometer" for HDDs and SSDs are already provided in SMART data that is more or less standatized and accessible using many tools. The data is not resettable by mortals similarly to car odometers.

My company doesn't even pay for WinRAR. Their approach is pretty awful, haha.

If you use it or have it installed after 30 days without a buying, your company has violated the terms of the license.

Something that makes me lean anti-Google and anti-Meta is how they make it impossible to disable the addicting features like shorts and reels. This is inarguably an anti-user move because the only people who want to use such an option are those who recognize they have a problem wasting time on those features. In my own small sphere this is the most visible "evil" thing that these companies do.

If you disable watch history in Youtube it conveniently disables all front page suggestions and you can also disable autoplay: https://www.theverge.com/2023/8/8/23824672/youtube-blank-hom...
buccal commented on The X220 ThinkPad Is the Best Laptop in the World   btxx.org/posts/x220/... · Posted by u/exiguus

Best means that it's better than everything else which in this case is factually incorrect.

I do think that X220 is a great laptop because despite its age, it still runs great.

But, tbh, i don't think that it holds up well in terms of performance if we compare it to any modern laptop.

What we do want is a modern laptop which is open source friendly, has a great battery life, is repair-friendly, has a good hardware. Do Framework laptops fit this criteria? I don't know. I also do hear that the modern Thinkpads are good but they used to be better, years back.

Many Asus Expertbook laptops support RAM replacement, has multiple storage slots, ethernet and other ports.

Same with iOS (and I presume Android)! So many apps will add extra nags inside the app until you enable notifications. But then as long as you do, they'll send you spam notifications on a frequent basis.

Microsoft 365 [whatever/copilot] apps on Android. If you enable notifications in Outlook you course get notifications when it updates to new version. Or the Office app shows a notification that it can open every PDF you download.

Is this open source? I think the world could use a good free and open 'utility' app for PDFs. Its hard to do digital business these days without even moderate features needed in PDF editing without paying Adobe or non-free online services - JUST TO EDIT A DOCUMENT.
buccal · 4 months ago
Not open source but free and works in Windows: PDFGear.

OpenTherm is a cool idea but even new installations aren't always wired for it. When installing a new smart thermostat I found the installation has been wired as S Plan with the few cables running between the boiler location and valves location already consumed. Makes the job much bigger if you're not prepared for it.
buccal · 4 months ago
There are many wireless OpenTherm thermostats. Wired is better but is not required for modern thermostats.
