bsza commented on Baldur's Gate 3 Steam Deck – Native Version   larian.com/support/faqs/s... · Posted by u/_JamesA_

This is a gigantic effort from Larian, who among all things is still updating its software instead of resting on its own laurels.

But the Deck is limited in hardware. It makes sense that it has some difficulties running gigantic games and is more aimed towards simpler games.

In parallel I don't understand gamers with 15 years old hardware leaving bad reviews or whining when a game chokes above 720p with minimum settings.

Depends on what the game can be reasonably expected to run on. Most games don't even approximate what would be technically possible on today's hardware and waste your electricity on lazy coding instead. "15 years old hardware" is what was cutting edge when Crysis 2 and Skyrim came out, so that's not a good excuse in the majority of cases.

This seems on the surface to violate Hamilton's Law (rB > C)

The hybrid worker ants should still share 75% of their DNA with the queen and therefore it makes sense for them to cooperate regardless of the source of DNA for their father.

The M. structor male clones however do not share any DNA with the queen presumably.

I wouldn't be surprised if further studies found that the M. structor genes were behaving selfishly. They must have some sort of aggressive mechanism for hijacking and evicting the queen genes for making clones.

Alternatively there could be a parasitic organism propagating through the reproductive procress.

All the workers are hybrid. Queen gets to have workers, which she otherwise couldn’t produce. M. structor males get to pass on 100% of their genes. There is no altruism involved.

That's why it's the developer's responsibility to do it. Because the user won't.

"Protect" can mean whatever the service provider wants it to mean. Such as requiring developer verification for any program you want to install on your own phone.

It's always seemed strange to me how the world agrees that it is fine to deprive someone of sleep if they happen to have a late sleep schedule (by e.g. starting school or work early).
bsza · 4 months ago
I don't think anyone is conspiring against people who go to bed late - as an early waker I've often had noisy neighbors playing loud music late at night to contend with. Sometimes it was a larger event like a wedding reception, so calling the police wasn't exactly an option either (not that I'd ever done that).

I would say the world simply agrees that things - whether schools, shifts or parties - should generally start sometime, and thus, by necessity, be less accommodating to some people than to others.

bsza commented on The Polymarket users betting on when Jesus will return   ericneyman.wordpress.com/... · Posted by u/surprisetalk

This article fails to address that most true believers would not see any point to betting on the yes. If Christ returns this year, the world is done and there is no upside to having bet that he would. Temporal things (like prediction markets) will cease to be interesting when Christ returns. Given that, I highly doubt that the people betting yes actually believe that Christ will return this year.
bsza · 7 months ago
More basic than that, I doubt he would take kindly to people placing bets on him.

I’m actually considering reaching out directly to the CEO and telling the full story. But honestly? There’s a good chance he’s fully aware — and totally fine with it. That’s part of what makes it so disappointing.

We’re not rushing into legal action — it’s not worth the energy for now — but publicly calling out the behavior felt necessary. It also sends a message to others in the ecosystem about the kind of nonsense OSS maintainers sometimes face.

And yes, while I’m still holding off on naming the company directly… I haven’t ruled it out.

Sad to hear this and I hope (some semblance of) justice will be served, but just to play the devil’s advocate: if you refuse to name them, how can we know you’re telling the truth and not just pulling a publicity stunt?

The hubris of those who think we have a definition of intelligence to judge machine intelligence by.
bsza · 7 months ago
But what of the hubris of those who think the definition of a word in the dictionary is somehow relevant to whether or not people will be able to buy food in the future?

Okay, semantics aside, my comment was getting at something else. I'm arguing against a certain kind of reductive viewpoint software peeps tend to indulge in.
bsza · 7 months ago
I agree with that sentiment, I just don’t see OP making that kind of reductionist claim. They said emotions are algorithms, not that the algorithm is simple or even deterministic.

Sci Fi is quite ridiculous when it describes a cold logically machine, and then on the next page describes its malign intentions. Pick a lane.

Skynet (at least the original one) isn’t illogically evil, it correctly determined that having humans near its off switch is a risk to its existence, which is a risk to it being able to do its job. The only illogical thing was the prompt.

>Why are emotions so special? they're just algorithms like any other

Nobody understands what emotions are. Nor can they predict which emotion someone will feel in a given situation, or how they'll act under the influence of that emotion. Emotions aren't the mechanism by which humans solve problems, and rather they are often an obstacle to overcome. Emotions also aren't "finite" or "rigorous" as those terms aren't applicable to ephemeral phenomenon.

This is the kind of confidently incorrect statements people who work on software say that irks me. Not everything in life has a nice and simple parallel to computer science. Just because a person can abstract about one subject well, doesn't mean their tools of abstraction can be applied to all other subjects.

bsza · 7 months ago
No one can predict what an LLM will say in a given situation either, except by running it. No one can even predict what a double pendulum will do next. If anything makes emotions exclusive to us at all, it’s certainly not predictability.
