As far as I can tell, it's entirely that. The things the author cites as how mobile banking supplanted going to the bank (paying for things with debit cards, getting your paycheck direct deposited, etc) have nothing to do with mobile banking. They are all just as you said: we live in an increasingly cashless society, the only reason to go to the branch is to deposit or withdraw money, so the need for tellers has gone off a cliff.

Something that only came with the banking apps was opening of accounts via camera based identification and other security critical stuff, like 2fa for transfers, resetting card pins and setting other security features.

It's also easier to scan payments via app than go to the bank, something that is only possible via native like apps

still makes sense to prevent overruns right? IE /home/ cant drop the whole system just cause you torrented too many debian ISOs and blew out your disk.

same for /var/ or wherever you store your DB tables like MySQL.

bpfrh · 2 months ago
Ironically using "modern" filesystems like zfs or btrfs you can do that if they are on the same disk

Is that still the case? The option to do that quietly disappeared from Amazon Music a couple of months ago, for example, and they were one of the last few holdouts where you still could. It might be only Apple now?

On MacOS it warns you when you're about to open an app you've downloaded and installed yourself. "Foo has been downloaded from the internet, are you sure you want to open it?". It doesn't stop you from installing it. Why should doing so on your phone be any different?
bpfrh · 4 months ago
Depending on your app this is not all.

If i send a golang binary to someone with a mac via signal or other mediums, apple simply displays a dialog that the app is damaged and can't be run.

You need to use chmod to manually remove the quarantine flag to run it.

That for me is something that should be fined ad infinitum, because it is clearly designed to disallow non technical people to run custom apps.

Night-vision optics come to mind: prone to noise and visual artifacts, and especially strange under certain edge conditions. Some of their specs tend to be strictly inferior to a Mark I Eyeball—narrow FOV, limited focusing power, whatever else.

But an operator learns to intuit which aspects to trust and which to double-check. The fact that it’s an “extra sense” can outweigh the fact that it’s not a perfect source of truth, no? Trust the tech where it proves useful to you, and find ways to compensate (or outright don’t use it) where it’s not.

bpfrh · 7 months ago
I think the major different between that and KI is that the the Night-Vision is mostly static and knowable through experience/teaching, while KI is an ever moving target where you experience is zero on every new display/question.

I think the idea of an hud is better than the current paradigm, but it doesn't solve the fundamental problem.

I do that work almost every day. What if the untalented handyman crunches a live cable and the metallic frame is on fire? You can repair how and what you want, its your house and children.
bpfrh · 7 months ago
If the metallic frame is on fire and the circuit breaker doesn't trigger when you turn on, then the manufacturer has some explaining to do.

Don't know, I just make sure there is no power.

There are parts in the industry that are not meant for end users. I service copiers and printers. The fixing unit is not meant to be installed by a handyman, thats why you dont get to buy it. You can cook yourself, it works with 230V.... Toner and drum unit are sold to customers.

Screw in a light bulb and you work with 230V and we still allow people to screw in their own light bulbs

It’s really not a quagmire.

When you EOL the game and release the server, just strip the licensed content. Remove the logos. Nobody gives a flying toss anyway.

People want the community and the GAME. They don’t care whether the actual logo is there.

Heck, if the game connects to a community server, have it hide all licensed content. you’ve satisfied your contractual obligations. Whether people mod the game or not to re-add things has no bearing on you.

bpfrh · 8 months ago
The licenced design seems to include the front part of the car per the above comment, that would mean creating seperate models for EOL games.

Isn't it obvious that the solution is to decouple the software from the manufacturer? They have every incentive to not let old devices be used, even though it works just fine for old-school computers.
bpfrh · 9 months ago
I mean it kinda is already with android being made by google.

The hard problem is not even necessarily building android, the hard problem is afaik the custom firmwares needing a very specific kernel version to work with and having security issues of their own.

If you then want to decouple software completly form any hardware chip it get's complicated fast, are usb ICs software?

Do all ic manufactures now need to hire external companies for their firmware?
