500MB average seems like a gross exaggeration. I agree apps are oversize but I have maybe 2 native apps on mobile that are so large.

The UK's new electronic visa application form app is over 200MB and it is literally only a 3 page application form. Program efficiency at its finest!

...what are the reasons for not doing it? I can only think of costs of repair, switching to other software.

zero documentation, you have to reverse engineer all the circuits, soc's, and everything up the stack from there. Obsolecence by obscurity.

My cursory understanding of the ruling is that it applies if you have several million users in the UK... [1]

Is that the case here (and it just happens that I have no clue what this particular site is about) ?

Or am I grossly misunderstanding the act (very likely I guess since IANAL) ?

Ofcom’s advice to the Secretary of State

Ofcom submitted their advice – and the unerpinning research that had informed it – to the Secretary of State on 29 February 2024 and published it on 25 March. In summary, its advice is as follows: Category 1

Condition 1:

Use a content recommender system; and
Have more than 34m UK users on the U2U part of the service
Condition 2:

Allow users to forward or reshare UGC; and
Use a content recommender system; and
Have more than 7m UK users on the U2U part of the service
Ofcom estimates that there are 9 services captured by condition 1 and 12-16 likely to be captured by condition 2. There is one small reference in the annex that the 7m+ monthly users threshold corresponds to the DSA (A6.15) Category 2a (search)

Not a vertical search service; and
Have more then 7m UK users
Ofcom estimates that there are just 2 search services that currently sit (a long way) above this threshold but that it is justified to put it at this level to catch emerging services. Category 2b (children)

Allow users to send direct messages; and
Have more than 3m UK users on the U2U part of the service
Ofcom estimates that there are “approximately 25-40 services” that may meet this threshold.

A 250+ page law will have so many edge cases I doubt you would want to test it especially in a country with a government that has recently cracked down and arrested people for online "crimes". Sad the UK government has descended to this level of stupidity.

It used to be that if I saw a typo or grammatical error in someone's writing, I'd switch off, thinking the author really didn't care that much about the text they're writing to proofread it. Now, the complete opposite. Leaving in typos and such shows a clear signal that the author cared enough about what they're writing not to out source to AI.

Related to that, I saw a local band posting marketing material online, that was this kind of amateurish typography with a collage of photos decorated with coloured markers. 2 years ago I'd be laughing at what a terrible job it was, today, it's a breath of fresh human air from all the slop we're subjected to all over the internet. It caught my attention, so much that I'm going to see the band this weekend.

Any spelling or grammar mistake is enough for me to re-publish one of my e-books (which usually takes about 20 minutes). The reason is that even a simple error may be enough to pull your reader out of their fantasy space and back into the real world, and as an avid reader myself I would prefer that did not happen.

I am working for a medium sized Swiss company. We're coding our own ERP, based on a nightmare of a stack. We call it "security by confusion". An attacker would maybe find its way in, but he'll never find the way out. If he destroys 90% of our code, we'll still be up and running, because 95% of the codebase is obsolete.

Have coded a couple of full MRP systems for various large companies based on my own model and I would be intrigued to see how this will work. I usually include the default recommended security and DR practices and then add my own OTP-hash based layer for key authorisations. I thought I was paranoid, but your system sounds more like an end-of-the-world scenario rather than just keep the production-line going in the factory.

Thinking Machines was chosen over the Cray because they had more visual appeal. Sheryl Handler the CEO had (has) a real flair for and it showed; they were neat looking machines

The film is about us not accepting a clone for the original. The massive irony is that the film is likely going to generate the same response from the commenters.

If you are renting a car abroad then check your travel insurance as it may cover any excesses. The one I just bought for the UK covers up to $5000 excess so exceeds the CDW. Of course I always do a once around the car with the phone before and after rental which I am sure everyone does these days
