Pixie agreed to be acquired by NewRelic
boston_sre87 · 5 years ago
Yea, the deal is not yet closed, but assuming no regulatory hold up (think new relic is public, so if pixie is worth enough, they'll need to go through HSR) or similar stuff, they agree that the acquisition will go through.

What's the advantage of monitoring from the kernel layer? It's not jumping out at me...
boston_sre87 · 5 years ago
It's extremely quick to do it there as well. Originally, bpf was created to replace tcpdump with a quicker less impactful alternative. People saw that it was a pretty neat alternative so they started extending it (the e in eBPF). Think they might have finally come round again and just call it BPF now again.

For those who want to play with eBPF on kubernetes using an open source tool there is cilium & hubble[1], plug-and-play CNI & Network Observability tool.

These iovisor guys write some cool stuff that uses bpf, like: https://github.com/iovisor/kubectl-trace

No, that was never the strategy, no matter how many times people on HN claimed it was. Both Uber and Lyft are aiming for profitability next year with human drivers.

(Disclaimer, I work for Lyft but this has been said in public many, many times by both companies.)

boston_sre87 · 5 years ago
What is the strategy to get to profitability then? Have only heard of the self driving route before.

Has there been any progress on the zfs on linux Linus disagreement front since this article?

> P.P.S. We're offsetting by 3x every bit of CO2 this creates via Cool Effect.

Is this really how this carbon offset thing works?

You release a bunch of greenhouse gases - but it's "OK" because you pay money to some organization that might eventually plant some trees (or use your money to buy/rent fossil-fuel-burning machinery to orchestrate the planting of trees)?

Seems like guilt-avoidance to me.

Yep, it is.

It’s not about being sloppy. It’s about ego and hubris.

Just want to add: I work with (ex-)FAANG folks on a daily basis, too. Not all of them have egos bigger than their britches. But the ones who think “this industry just needs better software, and I can write it” sure as hell do.

boston_sre87 · 5 years ago
Yes, I absolutely agree that there is a problem with greed, ego and hubris in sillicon valley. Just wanted to point out that not all engineers fall in that category. I think that confidence in writing solid software when paired with humility can lead to good outcomes. To me, it seems like the ego and hubris issue can cause the most amount of problems when an individual (e.g. zuckerberg) takes on a savior and machiavellian complex. It seems like most of them actually believe that they are making the world better and they don't see the harm that their self interested blood thirsty capitalist side does at all.

I hope like hell “FAANG caliber devs” never take an interest in this space. Or at least not until the culture changes substantially.

There are just some things that “throw devs (of any quality) at it” just doesn’t work. The health care industry is one of them.

boston_sre87 · 5 years ago
Believe it or not, there are some engineers that have worked at faang companies that are not sloppy and I work with a few of them.

How about Powershell

https://github.com/PowerShell/PowerShell

I can't call myself a fan of powershell but if everyone switched I'd get used to it.

sh and bash both seem like they should die in a fire. They are full of foot guns that end up costing millions in breaches and lost data. The space think even bit Apple back in the day, they had some OS upgrade script that ended up deleting your entire hard drive if there was a space in the volume name.

boston_sre87 · 5 years ago
I usually avoid scripting in bash or sh and use python instead on the linux side. But yea, powershell is a pretty solid shell and seems more intuitive than bash/sh. The object oriented part is pretty awesome and lets you introspect objects easily so you know what kind of properties and methods are available.

It seems like a very cool thing, that's mostly inaccessible, due to being so archaic, to non kernel programmers.

Brendan Gregg (the guy that gave that talk that the article linked to) wrote an extremely awesome book called systems performance. It is the best and most pragmatic operating system book I've read and is definitely worth a read. It will give you a better idea about how all of this eBPF stuff applies.
