Why would people complain about being able to walk to where they need to go? It's obviously being cut off from the places that they aren't able to walk to that people have a problem with. Deflecting from one by pretending it's about the other is a clear sign of bad faith.

Everything after it is quite frankly, terrible.

So yes, they didn't take on these roles organically, but no, they weren't aiming to do so: they were examining behavioral influence and community dynamics with that particular experiment.
I'd recommend skimming over the paper; it's a pretty quick read and they aren't making any truly outrageous claims IMO.
