One thing I admire about Snowflake is a real commitment to self-cannibalization. They were super out front with Iceberg even though it could disrupt them, because that's what customers were asking for and they're willing to bet they'll figure out how to make money in that new world

Video of their SVP of Product talking about it here: https://youtu.be/PERZMGLhnF8?si=DjS_OgbNeDpvLA04&t=1195

Supporting Iceberg is eventually having people leaving you because they have better elsewhere, but this is birectionnal, it means you can welcome people from Databricks because you have feature parity.

Feels old when you see how it played out to become SQL for everything in the data ecosystem lately.

Even though SQL as flaws, maybe a lot, it has one upside which is: it's so easy to onboard people on it, in the data ecosystem (warehousing etc.) it means that we can do way much stuff faster than before and hire less technical people, which is great

I love Django, and the new `tasks` framework to replace `celery` (/whatever processor you prefer) looks great.

I've only recently come back to it, and I do hope they continue to add more batteries to their "batteries included" framework over time. I was surprised just how much stuff I had to add to my little project that will require updating _outside_ the main framework, eg.:

* django-components for little template partials (I'm not sure the new partials feature is robust enough to replace this)

* django-(configurator,split-settings,pick-your-poison-here) for more robust settings management

* structlog for much better logging (feels like this should get baked into Python's stdlib...)

* debug-toolbar

* dj-database-url for parsing database URLs (should be baked in!)

* django-money

There's plenty of other deps that are less annoying/surprising (eg. Sentry, granian, Tailwind), but the set above feel like more or less like they should be baked in, and (to my mind) don't represent an inordinate amount of work to adopt.

Other than that, it's been a real pleasure coming back to it, and I'm excited for its continuation.

EDIT -- oh, and built-in static types, stubs and stubs-ext were a bit of a nightmare to get working well.

I'm curious to see how you successfully got working well the types as I'm lost in the nightmare for a few days.

blef commented on 996 work culture is sad and inhumane. Whatever's wrong with 888 – or even 000?   theguardian.com/commentis... · Posted by u/mellosouls

“888” is eight hours each of work, sleep and recreation, which is a great thing.

The ironic part of it is that most of the people doing 996 are building AI to replace humans work. And this is something that we don't talk about when speaking about 996. It's only a privilege, a lot of people would love to have normal job or a 996.

I come from Europe, I've had my high and lows when it comes to work hours, I was a consultant worked a lot, then a freelance and worked 2 day a week, now startup founder (YC) I don't count my hours but I'm close to working 6 days a week. To be honest the 4 years I worked 2 days a week were awesome and I'd wish everyone to reach that state where work is not the most important thing you do each week.

Except Databricks or Snowflake I have trouble seeing who in the data space would like to buy them. They are small among the big data companies ($1B rev)
