Just a bit under 15 years after we did this at Twitter.

Don't do it!! Next you'll be setting up a weather station. Then you'll be setting up a microphone to ID birds via Merlin. Then home Assistant. Oh gosh it never ends.

But it's so much fun.

I feel attacked.

At some point they'll end up just doing the Bieber rack [1]. It's when a shard becomes so hot that it just has to be its own thing entirely.

@bluesky devs, don't feel ashamed for doing this. It's exactly how to scale these kinds of extreme cases.

We never actually had a literal “Bieber Box”, but the joke took off.

Hot shards were definitely an issue, though.

Do you know the name of the problem or strategy used for solving the problem? I'd be interested in looking it up!

I own DDIA but after a few chapters of how database work behind the scenes, I begin to fall asleep. I have trouble understanding how to apply the knowledge to my work but this seems like a useful thing with a more clear application.

Yes, we used the Yahoo! “Feeding Frenzy” paper as the basis for the design of Haplocheirus (the timeline service).

We're actually hoping to get mmtK included in Ruby to be able to use more advanced GCs. Medium term we hope to use Immix: https://bugs.ruby-lang.org/issues/20860

And yes, we're aware of ZGC &co https://www.eightbitraptor.com/presentations/RubyKaigi2023-m...

Amazing to see this happening. I wrote the non-moving Immix collector at Twitter for our Ruby runtime, Kiji.

Good luck!

Surprising that the legendary Taco Bell in Pacifica isn’t the most expensive one, though it is close. It has a fireplace, it serves margaritas, and it has a walk-up window for hungry surfers.

It is also occasionally a wedding venue.

This seems like a lot of effort to go to to avoid buying a trombone.

(Former HS trombone player. Go ahead with the jokes, I love them because I've lived them)

As a current semi-pro trombonist, I had the same reaction.

Relevant aside: Alan Kaplan has been recording Jacob Collier transcriptions for his YouTube channel. Check out “Moon River”.

> What about IKEA? It's smaller than Novo Nordisk, but they also use a non-profit parent company, which is admittedly a bit bizarre.

Smells like tax evasion, but what do i know. Isn't IKEAs founder one of the richest people in Swiss?

Sweden is not Switzerland. And he died almost ten years ago.

Quiet in the terms of DC grade switching, I'm not sure you could get away with such a switch in a home environment. The 100G optics need plenty of airflow to keep cool so it's not just a case of swapping the fans for something smaller
bitbckt · a year ago
The rack I’m referring to is in my home. YMMV, of course.

I have an SN2700 in my rack, next to a pair of Arista 7060CXs (as a point of comparison). These are wildly under-rated devices outside of the STH fanbase.

You may be surprised at how quiet and low power these Mellanox switches can be.
