There is no stigma in the pretty words from HR and massive stigma in the actions of HR

Exactly this. It's all we care then if it impacts your work - boom you're out.

>>Tony Hsieh had a surprisingly large collection of half-empty liquor bottles at his desk.

Not just Tony.

My best friend used to work at Zappos. He used to brag to me that every employee/team gets their own mini-fridge, which is stocked with booze and liquor. He said that a common "bonding" experience for different teams in the company is to exchange different types of liquor. This was in early 2010s.

He said drinking on the job is common, but going overboard is discouraged (for obvious reasons). But even he admitted that Zappos clearly understood that in order to attract customer service people to the company (headquartered in Las Vegas), being able to drink on the job, i.e. during the day, would be a great recruitment tool.

I thought it was very cynical, although it obviously worked out well for them. Too bad about Tony though, I hear he was a great guy.

Wait what are you kidding!? Drinking DURING the day was encouraged? So the famed company culture is to let everyone get drunk as long as they're all hitting targets? Recipe for disaster for anyone who stays a significant amount of time. It seems cool when you're young then after 10 years people start getting serious problems like alcoholic neuropathy. Very sad situation all round.

bilbopotter commented on Should Remote Compensation Be Tied to Location?   haacked.com/archive/2020/... · Posted by u/allannienhuis

Pay are subject to demand and supply. If a company insist on co-located employees, pay is subject to demand and supply at that location. If company allows for remote work, pay is subject to global demand and supply of remote employees.
bilbopotter · 5 years ago
Exactly. If companies tried to do this then people could just get a virtual address in an expensive city say New York and go and live somewhere cheap, say Guatemala. Also let's say out of 10 big software companies 8 offer same pay wherever you are, 2 location based. Which one are you gonna work for?

If you don't know who Pieter Levels is, the title makes it sound like this person makes $600k doing remote coding work on jobs found on Nomad List and Remote OK.

In actuality, he is an MBA who runs these two businesses.

Also he's up to about 900k now the video referred to is old.

μὴ φρόντιζε (don't worry): we have a reason! I used to teach Greek and Latin, and our very first product, Epigrammar, took its inspiration from Classical antiquity: the English word “epigram” comes from “ἐπί” (epi) and “γράφειν” (graphein) meaning “to write upon” (historically, epigrams were written upon household items such as broken pottery or sea shells). With Epigrammar, we wanted to digitize the ancient way of writing upon things, so instructors could give their best feedback once and repurpose it everywhere. Now, with Epihub, we're still focused on helping instructors (fun fact: Aristotle was a tutor to Alexander the Great), but at the same time, we also want to help people build hubs for knowledge (ergo, Epi-hub).

If it takes that length of explanation then you've got an issue. Also I won't remember that to tell a friend. Teachify on the hand is a gift

Epihub sounds more like a map of epipen sale points or something like that. Definitely 0 association with teaching.
