Hint: the current democrat establishment is also authoritarian. you're so, so close to it!
bbddg · a month ago
We don't even have to go that far to realize how quickly the democratic establishment would roll over in the face of a civil war. I don't think Chuck Schumer is going to be leading an armed resistance movement anytime soon.

Imagine the progress we could have made on climate change if this money had been funneled into that, instead of making some GPU manufacturers obscenely wealthy.

Yeah it’s infuriating to think about.

> You have to feel it.

The corporate machine does not feel it.

It can't be bargained with. It can't be reasoned with. It doesn't feel pity, or remorse, or fear. And it absolutely will not stop... ever, until you are dead.

> My supermarket, for example, only has electronic cash registers.

That's insane to me, in the EU anyway it's not permitted to only accept electronic payments..

> Retailers cannot refuse cash payments unless both parties have agreed to use a different means of payment. Displaying a label or posters indicating that the retailer refuses payments in cash, or payments made in certain banknote denominations, is not enough.

They have to accept cash in the US as well. The post you're replying to is just saying that they can't ring anything up or accept any payment without power.

In 1800, the government of the USA spent 2% of GDP.

In 2020, the government of the USA spent 30% of GDP.

In 2024, the government of France spent 57% of GDP.

Are the people of 2024 France really getting 28x the value from their government as 1800 USA?

It is not evil to ask these questions or to experiment with government,

And more people should consider backing off from political-media consumption as it is clearly toxic to the soul.

The reality that counts most is the one around you, and I see far too many people destroying their relationships with family, friends, and colleagues over national politics when there are much bigger fish to fry in one's own garden.

Imagine a world in which they use this computer to model ways to simplify the tax code.

Don't need a super computer to do that hah

> The fact that he was able to make a few phone calls and actually get hired into an influential position despite having zero background in government, civics, economics, finance etc. should, however, tell you everything you need to know about the department and its brain trust

I have no interest in defending Elon, but this assessment is unfair. Recall how during the Obama transition, a bunch of Silicon Valley'ers got hired in to help modernize government tech (and doubly so after the disastrous obamacare website rollout). Very few of those people had experience in govt, civics, etc.

bbddg · a year ago
Yeah and it was probably equally craven and opportunistic to bring them in as well.

Is your point that the money should go to companies that make things that people need as opposed to want? Or is your point that the money somehow flows to companies that make things that people neither need nor want?

Imagine doing something with money that isn't investing in a for profit company.

My wife writes a little, but reads a lot. One time she went back and re-read something she had written years ago, and came away thinking "I hate this type of writing! It thinks it's so damn smart!". Her takeaway was this: if you're in love with the way you phrased something, rewrite it.

Hey goal is to write a story with plot. Real characters. Arcs. As soon as she finds herself wasting time rolling sentences around her mouth, like toffee, with big fancy words, she is directly hurting the readers' flow. Sometimes it's nice to leave one or two, but in general you shouldn't try to be in love with every sentence you've written. But every sentence should move the story forward. Just tell the damn story. Because when you come back to your writing years later, it's those very stylish, witty, fancy phrases that will embarrass you.

Was it intentional that you used the phrase “rolling sentences around her mouth, like toffee” in a post about how it’s better to write plainly?

Disagree. I've seen things done with generative AI which I've wanted to see visualized for decades, but which were too difficult and time-consuming to do traditionally. I've also seen beautiful things that were either impossible to produce or impossible to even conceive of through traditional workflows.

Those make up an infinitesimally small portion of the total output, which is largely a deluge of crap, certainly. But, generally, rarity makes something more valuable and beautiful by comparison.
