I read "The Road" after becoming a parent, and it broke me.

Is there any eh video (short-docu style) on CrossFit?

All I know about it is that people make fun of it. And they do weird pull-ups that I don't want to do. But I am attracted to the community aspect because I've also heard about that.

Like most things, "dont knock it till you have tried it". You never have to do something you are either uncomfortable doing or are unable to do; and there always progressions for movements that might be difficult for you. For example, many overhead movements are difficult for me but the coaches will always work with you to find something you can do that will still be challenging and achieve the goal of the workout.

A fitness community. This could be either a BJJ (Brazilian Jiu Jitsu) place or even a CrossFit gym. I've done both and while I'm not here to promote CrossFit, I am here to say that a group fitness class is awesome for meeting other people and finding a community of people that do something similar as you, but have absolutely nothing to do with your work.

I workout with Police officers, Lawyers, Doctors, Dentists, Stay at home moms, Accountants, Students, other tech folks, etc, you name it they're all there.

There's something about "shared misery" that brings people together and builds a comrade. That turns into a community where you start to hang out with them out of the gym/etc.

This happens at any group fitness place where the same people show up at the same time to do the same thing. It's natural, organic and freeing.

I've moved across the country 3 times now and this is how I integrated into each area I moved into.

Fully agree, the crossfit gym I joined several years ago has become an important part of my life.

Software engineer for 12 years then got depressed about the job. Got into firefighting because I want to go to heaven and figured that with the 1 day on 2 days off schedule I can continue software on the side anyway.

Turns out just because you are a good software engineer, it doesnt mean you will be a good firefighter, and I need to dedicate a huge amount of time learning the job because software is a creativity focued job and Fire/EMS is a memory based one, and i have a bad memory.

The sleep is terrible, im an introvert and have a hard time getting along with others at the firehouse, but will say without a doubt it was absolute best decision ive ever made in my life. You will never see the facial expressions behind a computer you see in this job.

Im doing creative data analytics for fire depts to see how to save more lives, and thinking about making the swap to law enforcement just because i think my past as a software engineer can save more lives there. One example of my analytics is posting cops in areas where statistically it isnt likely for fire/EMS to show up in time, if the cop gets on sceane sooner, they can begin patient care sooner, and unltimaly increase rosc rare. You gotta be the change you want to see in the world you know?

I love all the series about writing your own X in 100 lines of code. It gives you the understanding of technology and removes a lot of unnecessary details.

The great examples of this are 'A from-scratch tour of Bitcoin in Python' https://karpathy.github.io/2021/06/21/blockchain/ and 'Let's build GPT: from scratch, in code, spelled out' https://youtu.be/kCc8FmEb1nY from Andrej Karpathy

I wonder if anybody tried to collect all such projects together and built his own 'Internet in just 100 lines of code'

Adding Liz Rice's superb "Containers from scratch" to the list. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_TsSmSu57Zo

My son has put his airpods through the wash at least 3 times and they continue to function!

It would be the equivalent of a US company clawing back a 401k contribution match, which is kind of crappy imo, especially if after a year.

Borland manuals were a pure delight..

as was the speed of Turbo Pascal compilation and the elegance of their text mode windowing object system.

I remember scouring all the possible BBS dialup file servers to find a compiler for my first 8086 machine .. I knew there had to be something better than GW Basic .. I could not find a compiler for free, but did happen up on A86 assembler, so got an intro to how the machine really worked.

Was so happy when I could afford Turbo Pascal back in the day. best product ever.

I remember as a 17 year old spending 50 Irish pounds on a copy of Turbo Pascal and being giddy with excitement when the brightly colored box and manuals arrived. I pretty much memorized them, and of all the things from the late 80s its the one I wish I had kept!
