bank6062 commented on Ask HN: Is prompt engineering just snake oil?    · Posted by u/wg0

Think of it more as "prompt-fu", akin to "google-fu"--or how to google. You do have to know how to talk to an LLM, and it will be important. But it's not so much engineering, as we come to think of it in software traditionally. I wouldn't get hung up on the name, but just see it for what it is--a bad name for something we'll need to learn to be effective. It won't go away entirely, but will be mitigated to be less important as LLMs and AI get better.

Prompt engineering has been fascinating to follow at my job. People believe that they will be using "prompt engineering" as a new way to verbally interact with peers. As if they now have found the Rosetta stone for their own quirks.

How do these runners knees not succumb to problems? Genetic lottery? I run 6 miles on a treadmill with zero drop & pronation inserts, stretch withe a calf wedge & still feel like I'm flying close to the sun with my knees.

I had knee pains when running only on the roads. It was due to weak muscles to support it.

Switched to trail running and it's been a life saver. It's a lot easier pace, but the hills/mountains really help stabilize the glutes and core. I'm running longer/further and still close to my 5k times from being a road runner

Very endearing post :). I’m keeping a collection of computing holy wars that I come across if anyone wants to check it out: https://josh8.com/blog/wars_of_computing.html

I’ll add a footnote to this post, it captures the spirit well.

If anyone has suggestions for things to add to my list it’d be much appreciated

I wish I could find it, but the Jacob Thornton vs Doug Crockford semi-colon in JS war was fun.

I’m bullish on Intel even with their current struggles. I think owning their own infrastructure will pay off in the future when competitors are getting squeezed by fabs playing supply side economic games.

I was at Intel for 4 years. They always said they had

Enough cash in the bank Would be successful as long as the fabs are busy

They are losing contracts, losing talent and are not keeping the fabs busy. They were overly arrogant. And the fact the top talent can make 3-5x with less BS anywhere else only compounds it.

bank6062 commented on Ask HN: Have you made a career move “down” on purpose, and how has it been?    · Posted by u/throw_booored

Yes. Went from Senior leadership back to IC. Life is so much easier for me. I'm doing more coding, solving harder problems and less "people management".

But the company is also a big factor. Previous job was a rotating door. New job has a solid culture.
