b3ing commented on OpenCiv3: Open-source, cross-platform reimagining of Civilization III   openciv3.org/... · Posted by u/klaussilveira

Civ III is still my go-to activity for long flights with no internet - I've yet to find a better way to instantly time-travel forward 12 hours.

I haven't tried OpenCiv3, but I'm glad it exists - getting vanilla Civ III running on MacOS is a hassle and still has issues with e.g. audio and cutscenes. I also hope it leads to a way to improve worker automation. Managing your workers well is important, doing it manually is tedious, and the built-in Automate feature is really bad.

I like Civilization games but they make 4hrs feel like 30min, so I can’t play them. Otherwise it would be the year 2060 already

I really hope Anthropic turns out to be one of the 'good guys', or at least a net positive.

It appears they trend in the right direction:

- Have not kissed the Ring.

- Oppose blocking AI regulation that other's support (e.g. They do not support banning state AI laws [2]).

- Committing to no ads.

- Willing to risk defense department contract over objections to use for lethal operations [1]

The things that are concerning: - Palantir partnership (I'm unclear about what this actually is) [3]

- Have shifted stances as competition increased (e.g. seeking authoritarian investors [4])

It inevitable that they will have to compromise on values as competition increases and I struggle parsing the difference marketing and actually caring about values. If an organization cares about values, it's suboptimal not to highlight that at every point via marketing. The commitment to no ads is obviously good PR but if it comes from a place of values, it's a win-win.

I'm curious, how do others here think about Anthropic?

b3ing commented on Adobe Won't Discontinue Animate   theverge.com/tech/873621/... · Posted by u/tambourine_man

They haven’t done any real updates to it in several years. They are other more innovative apps for animation these days. Flash was awesome under Macromedia but those days and possibility of easy/creative web building are over, it’s now just an outdated animation app.

Other products have been innovating, Adobe let Animate rot after 2 yrs from the Apple/Jobs decision. They could of made it better for other purposes but didn’t want to

Because modern building materials like concrete weren't as popular?

The Romans had concrete and the Greeks had something similar but less advanced

The US won’t adopt it unless you can prove it increases revenue, but for those that already make money today from traffic. Parking lots, toll roads, Uber/lyft, automobile manufacturers, etc

Just ask your favorite AI "How U.S. compares to others countries in healthcare metrics?" and you'll probably get a detailed list of how U.S. healthcare is more expensive than many other countries while ranking quite low in outcomes: life expectancy, maternal and infant mortality, chronic disease, ... (and also having part of the population out of the insurance network)

You are entitled to have whatever opinion you want on the matter, but that doesn't change the facts.

Sometimes people believe that if the US isn’t doing it already, there isn’t a better way, because somehow the best nation on the planet would be doing it already, it’s blind patriotism, rather than accept their might be better solutions. It why we care more about the flag or eagle than the US Constitution.

To get some transplants you need to be vaccinated. I don’t get it, is it to make the healthcare industry more money?

I’m waiting for the next crazy denial, like that dinosaurs didn’t exist or that the earth is the center of the universe… just give it a few years
