posting jobs without the intention of hiring or having the headcount available should be illegal under CA law with a 1MM$ fine per occurence

recently i was given 72 hours for a take home. they required me to keep the “challenge” confidential and assign the rights to the code to them. i’m wondering what you all think of that.

(As a user) Is the Jetbrains model realistic at all for your use case? They charge a monthly fee, but if you stop a subscription, you can keep using the last version you paid for with no further updates. They also offer long term loyalty discounts to encourage subscribers to stick with them past the expiration.

Carrot, not stick, I suppose.

Something to consider... it does sound more like a small business / small time user type situation and not an enterprise arrangement.

Your tone is overly aggressive.

And I don't know how I can be clearer than in the comment you are replying to: "My point was that it reasonable to be reluctant to spend $200 to $250 to replace a small component of a device that is only worth $300."

Which part of this sentence is unclear?

Your Porshe analogy is not appropriate. If a Porsche with a working gearbox is worth 35k, then yes, I'd be reluctant to spend 30k on a gearbox alone.

the device is worth $3,000 but listed for $300 because it is used and likely has problems

It is pretty good at coding; I have 40+ years of hobby and professional experience of coding in dozens of languages, from small projects to millions of lines architected and (co) written by me. There is software I wrote begin 90s still running production etc. I am a cto now but I still write code for my job about half time and in my free time as well, that is to say, I was until recently; now I have the tooling (made myself as I didn't like what there was at the time) to not code at all and yet I produce more code than ever. We use PRs and reviews and my colleagues are quite surprised about the speed and the quality. So yeah, not bad for sure even in my field of expertise.

We are now rolling out my tooling in the company so everyone can forget about the boring stuff and just focus on the business logic. There is resistance as this is going to cost jobs; we don't have infinite work to do and this is much (much) faster.

the last 1% of a project takes as much time as the first 99% of a project

I don't understand your point, to be honest.

My point was that it reasonable to be reluctant to spend $200 to $250 to replace a small component of a device that is only worth $300.

This was in response to someone who claimed the OP should just sell it if he didn't want to spend $200 to fix it - because it originally cost $3000-$5000.

why do you think a subassembly cannot cost $250 if you picked up the device for $300? just go buy another device then? what is your point? you want to buy a porsche for 20k and then you are surprised that a new gearbox is 30k???
