ashtonabc commented on Quill OS: An open-source OS for Kobo's eReaders   quill-os.org/... · Posted by u/Curiositry

This is very timely, as I recently purchased a Kobo device. One painpoint has been syncing sideloaded books between my phone and Kobo. I am using Readest sync with KOReader but I'd love to see a more seamless solution. Hoping that Quill can offer some sort of sync in the future.

I've found Syncthing to work well with my Kobo; it's easier than plugging it in and adding/removing books through Calibre. There's a KOReader plugin (https://github.com/jasonchoimtt/koreader-syncthing), or it can be enabled/disabled through Nickel (https://anarc.at/hardware/tablet/kobo-clara-hd/#install-sync...).

If it makes you feel better, Byuu faked his death at least once before and there's still no hard evidence he's dead.

Some more evidence seems to have come forward, via a FOIA request by Null: https://twitter.com/TheRalphRetort/status/177609783413719452...

I’m ashamed to say I played a mobile game for just over a year called Lords Mobile. It’s basically a F2P game where you can only be competitive if you are P2P. You have a castle and can train troops, craft armor, etc., and the more money you put in the more is at stake. The mechanics make it so you have to log-in at least once a day, otherwise an enemy guild will basically set a rally in order to “zero” you. Zero basically wipes out all the real money invested in the game. I wouldn’t call it a gambling addiction, but maybe it’s something to do with the sunken cost fallacy?

What surprised me was the sense of community around it. I met people from all over the world who play. We had discords, ran guilds, had actual leadership responsibilities, would call people in the middle of the night when they were being rallied, etc. Before I decided I was done, I was running bot accounts (to act as guild banks and whatnot), and it felt like a part time job. It was very involved for a mobile game. If I’m honest it was probably the sense of community I felt, which I hadn’t felt online in many years, that made me stick around. Still I don’t recommend anyone actually play it.

I played a similar game (Rise of Kingdoms) for three years, and I agree that the sense of community is a compelling reason to continue to play. When you're in a top alliance, the shared commitment—both money and time—creates an environment where relationships can really flourish. It also drives a great deal of drama and creates great stories. There are certain conditions created in pay-to-win games that can't be replicated in games with fairer monetization models, and those can be a real draw for some people.

I have to say, I miss Keyconfig SO badly.

Keyconfig and other legacy extensions are still available for modern Firefox with a modified userChromeJS: https://github.com/xiaoxiaoflood/firefox-scripts/tree/master...
ashtonabc commented on Ask HN: Is there a whole universe of Chinese software that we don't see?    · Posted by u/thinkloop

One project I use on a daily basis that isn't well known (and is by a Chinese developer) is Vimium C (https://github.com/gdh1995/vimium-c). It has similar functionality to Vimium, cVim, Vimperator, Pentadactyl and the like—browser navigation using vim-like shortcuts. Vimium C is quite customizable, offers great functionality, and the developer seems quite responsive to issues. The code is written in TypeScript and I found it easy to read. Highly recommended.

I need to learn the tooling around anki.

I was trying to edit the full hsk1-6 flashcard set to just show hsk5.

But I didn't manage to find the right tools.

Tried to manually change the file (it's a sqlite dB inside a zip file) but the db is not structured in a way I managed get my head round.

Should try again.

The default tooling isn't great. Tools like CrowdAnki [0] and Anki Deck Manager [1] make it possible to manage decks in plain text. It's also helpful for collaborative deck development. Unfortunately I haven't been able to find many examples of decks managed this way online, but there is a relatively high quality geography deck worth looking at [2].

Going to the movies is just asking for a talker or phone user to ruin it. Most of the major chains have a warning about it, but it continues to happen on a regular basis. You have the options of either risking a fist fight or missing a good 10+ minutes looking for staff.

I want a "movie theater" that is essentially a private room with a TV that me, the spouse, and kids can watch it in. We can also pause for bathroom breaks and get food ordered/delivered. That's often why I just wait for the BluRay release and watch at home, the experience at the big chains is terrible.

I have visited theatres that perfectly match your description in Taiwan, with the exception that the film has to be out on DVD. You choose the size of room you would like (some rooms are large enough for parties, some are comfortable for two), pay for the amount of time you would like to book the room (with discounts for longer amounts of time or late night bookings), and choose from their library of DVDs. You are shown to your room and the movie is played. There is a phone to call the front desk and you can order food and drinks to be brought to your room. The chain I visited a few times is called U2MTV [1].
