LOL’ed IRL at “ In a future blog post I hope I can tell you about how we produce our own power and you should too.” Producing own power as a pre-requisite for running on-prem is a non-starter for many.

Depends on the race of the engineer. If you're gay or live in a blue city/state then you also lose your protection
asdfman123 · 11 days ago
Have any of you tried talking to a police officer in real life? If you're just polite to them they treat you like they're your private protection force.

Moreso in blue cities, I have no idea what point you're making there other than crime you've seen on TV is scary.

I'm never sure why people assume that Palantir is magically unlike the overwhelming majority of tech startups/companies I've worked at: vastly over promising what is possible to create hype and value while offering things engineering knows will never really quite work like they're advertised.

To your point, but on a larger scale, over hyping Palantir has the added benefit of providing a chilling effect on public resistance.

As a former government employee I had the same reaction to the Snowden leaks: sure the government might be collecting all of this (which I don't support), but I've never seen the government efficiently action on any data they have collected.

Incompetence might be the greatest safety we have against a true dystopia.

If they throw out things like due process and reasonable doubt they can do a whole lot with the data they've collected.

That may sound hyperbolic but I hope it's obvious to most people by now that it's not.

The police (FBI and ICE included) are never your friends. They work to protect the rich and powerful and not us.

Software engineers are definitely among the class of people protected by the police

AI is a good tutor, helping you understand what's going on with the codebase, and also helps with minor autocomplete tasks.

You should never just let AI "figure it out." It's the assistant, not the driver.

Gotta love the way German sounds to English ears. Always good for a chuckle.

This guy is a hacker hero - do the engineering needed, get the proof of concept built, move fast, break things, start over and go big, then scores a victory over the commies and saves his family.

People need to purposefully and intentionally do things. Sitting home on an app, watching TV is easy. There is no fear or rejection, there is no work to get out of the house, there is no risk. But there is also no reward.

My thoughts on this are you need to have multiple roots into your community. This is something that you go to often and talk to people, become a regular, say hi. Think back to how your parents or grandparents did it: They went to church/temple/synagogue, they went to PTA meetings, they talked to their neighbors, they were in clubs, they went to the same bar.

So I think doing things that get you out of the house, consistently the most important part:

1. People need to make a point to talk to their neighbors, invite them over for dinner or bbqs, make small talk. How towns are constructed now is a hindrance to this (unwalkable towns where all of the houses are big garages in the front and no porches).

2. Join a religious organization. Go to church, but also join the mens/womens group, join a bible studies class. Attend every week.

3. Join social clubs / ethnic organization. The polish or ukrainian clubs, knights of columbus, elks, freemasons. Go every week.

4. Join a club / league. Chess club, bowling league, softball league, golf league. Tech meetups, DnD Night etc. But you have to talk with people and try to elevate things to friendships.

5. Have lunch, happy hour, etc with coworkers.

I think the trick is getting off social media.

When I was a computer nerd in the 2000s, I noticed people used to like to hang around and chat, but I mostly didn't.

Now, everyone is an internet addict, and I was just ahead of the curve. No one hangs around and chats anymore.

When you get off social media, real life becomes far more interesting. The problem with addiction is that it's so stimulating that everything else is boring. You have to let your mind reset.

In my experience, I've seen engineers try to take on more work to get promoted, but the key issue is that they were doing more work at their own level instead of focusing on work that would be their responsibility if they promoted. If an IC takes on more and more IC work instead of management responsibilities, it's harder to promote them.

Maybe I missed something, but I don't quite understand the video title "NIST's NTP clock was microseconds from disaster". Is there some limit of drift before it's unrecoverable? Can't they just pull the correct time from the other campus if it gets too far off?

You'll never guess why. The answer might shock you.
