I just don't get it. NHS needs a big data platform so they go to a... spy tech company? Why are they so insistent that it must be Palantir that builds this, instead of choosing from a dozen of other consulting companies that don't have a dodgy track record?

Ideally the NHS would just build it in house, but sadly it's a slow and bloated organisation unable to innovate (as most government managed things usually become).

I honestly don't understand what's dodgy about Palantir. They build a platform to analyze big data and they have clients like government agencies, immigration control and law enforcement. What's the big deal here? Please educate me

It is drastically harder for people from the EU to immigrate to the USA than to the UK, even post Brexit.

the UK got itself to a pretty peculiar setup now. The market for devs isn't so high paid or that huge to need much more people that don't already have the right to work there. It's not as attractive as the US

Yes, EU migrants were a net positive. What Brexit did was to take their rights to contribute to the British economy - now they need visa for that and the best stay in their countries or go to USA.

I don't know why you fantasise about discriminating against productive law abading EU citizens. I guess you personally are better of out of EU and EU is better of by not having you. It's very creepy that you are annoyed that you can't arbitrarily discriminate against EU citizens.

Also, there's no such thing as a low-wage Eastern Europeans, they still rent in UK and shop in UK and are employed within the UK labour laws. If you are against low wages you should increase the minimum wage, if you can't compete against Eastern Europeans it's because you don't provide enough value to the employer to choose you. If British are outcompeted in the labour market, maybe British should re-evaluate their education system. British employers don't hire Bulgarian butchers when they need JavaScript developers just because it's cheaper to hire Bulgarian butchers. It simply means that Brits don't have the skills for the money they ask, the Eastern European ones have it and that's why they get the job at free market rate.

yep. there's nothing more mediocre than being against skilled immigration

I partially agree but early on there's an reference to a balancing couterculture that is now missing. However basing this on his current experience of a visit to London vs living there is short sighted. Merely visiting does not let you truly experience the massive breath and depth of a city. Even people living in city only experience a minority of the city.

I lived in London for years, earlier than the author, and could be considered to be part of a counter culture. I have friends & family still part of what I'd call counter culture in London and both then and now it was always a game of cat & mouse, with alternative scenes moving and reacting to the rest of the city. The corporations definitely hold most power and alternative cultures exist where their reach fades. To find the counter culture you needed to find the hard to find and personal links to it. They're still there, just purposefully hard to find.
