The swamp overfloweth. How do we cure the intractable corruption of Trump and his administration? Will the nation be worth a fragment of what it was once we do?

It was all witch hunt from there.

This dogmatic approach means you lose out on ergonomics by using poorly designed tools like bash and perl, so you incur those costs all the time for little potential benefit far away in the future (after all, that effect is just a broad hypothesis)

It has to be weighed against all the time spent learning, evaluating, and struggling with new tools. Personally, I've probably wasted a lot of time learning /new/ that I should have spent learning /well/.

Approximately zero people in the world care if you join a meeting at 1:00, or 1:01. It's good to aim to be punctual, but if you're off by a minute there is no consequence.

I'm curious how you came to such a universally sweeping conclusion. At any rate, it's incorrect as I have personally observed counterexamples in my professional career.

I don't know, isn't the consumer surplus evidenced by people using the app?

I wouldn't think of just blindly hailing a cab anymore, especially in a city that's new to me. It doesn't have to be the lowest possible price, the experience just has to be consistent.

Log into the app. It already has my credentials and payment information stored. See the price, distance and time up front. Follow along the route while I'm driving. No money exchanged, no watching the meter or wondering if he's driving me around in circles. No fumbling for payment or pressure to tip.

That's the value.

In terms of price discrimination, they make more money on business travels or when it's crazy busy. The alternative is you can't get a cab. So I'm okay with it.

Their operating margin is about 10% which is reasonable for a business. The S&P 500 operating margin is 12.22%

And it's super easy to shop around. I always look at both Lyft and Uber and almost always go w/ Lyft as it usually has the lower price.

What are people complaining about exactly?

You lack imagination. Two customers with the same itinerary might be quoted different prices not because of capacity constraints but because the platform has inferred that one customer is willing to pay more than the other... that's extracting consumer surplus and converting it to supplier surplus.

I also would like “give an incorrect location” as an option. Something like that would probably never be supported by Google or Apple officially, because unlike some other privacy features, it’s actively and overtly hostile to advertisers.
argomo · 3 months ago
Not just location, but all privacy sensitive API's. The OS should have built in support for segregating location, contacts, calendars, storage, etc. (GrapheneOS does this quite well with storage scopes). As part of this segregation you should be able to redirect the API to a custom implementation.

Thus, my transit app would have access to my real location while Amazon thinks I'm still at home and Pokemon Go thinks I'm on an around-the-works trip to collect location specific items.

> do you really think it’s a great idea to have no backup plan

What makes you think people haven’t made back up plans?

Or are you saying government needs to do it for us?

argomo · 3 months ago
Ah yes the old "let's make individuals responsible for solving societal problems" bit. Nevermind that the state is sometimes the only entity capable of addressing the situation at scale.

Pretty sure the police aren't enacting the laws they are obligated to enforce, the government is the ones doing that.

First: "Muddled laws give them wide discretion"

Second: You are responsible for your actions, even if you're just following orders.
