I am very curious about how people who do things like these remain employed. Is there anyone who has been on the back-end of one of these decisions? What's the motivation for keeping a predator around?
angrow · 7 years ago
Sadly often it's sympathy.

I'm not sure that knee-jerkingly smearing him (by association) as a racist eugenicist quite disproves the point that tenure is not protection from misguided attacks.

No need to turn to his associations for evidence, you're free to read his work and judge for yourself.

One of the most painful parts of Economics is how many mathematicians there are in the field. They treat discovery science as hypothesis science, and try to force reality fit their model - instead of gathering data about the real world first. Thus, we get models of Marginal Demand that don't include "not having enough money to buy something".

Edit: if this comment is unhelpful, please suggest an update.

I find it helpful, or at least informative, but since it confirms the model I already had of the field my opinion may not be trustworthy.

before everyone dives on the "PG hates the homeless!" bandwagon - consider that perhaps there are other reasons to oppose this bill? There can be many reasons to oppose a piece of legislation beyond simply being opposed to its stated intent.

Sure, they don't hate the idea of helping houseless people, they just hate the idea of that help being legally prioritized over their RoI.

Is there an "Economics for Hackers" resource or book that isn't tainted by political bias?
angrow · 7 years ago
No, but there are plenty whose politics are obfustacted enough that you could confuse it for steely-eyed objectivity.

I would check out Quern. Quern is an excellent Myst style game and comes closest to Myst style puzzles. From what I've seen of the "The Witness" is looked to be the same maze puzzle but repeated throughout the game. I loved Johnathan Blow's "Braid" but I passed on the Witness after seeing some gameplay.

The Witness is a fantastic game, and while all the puzzles are drawing a line on a screen, without getting into spoilers, they have a great deal more variety than you might think.

That said, unlike the magical-realism of Myst and Riven's lived-in locations, the island of The Witness is impressionistic: It's not supposed to feel like a real place, only a kind of 3-d painting filled with relaxing and thought-provoking details, and coincidences to notice. So it might not be your cup of tea.

Temperatures seem more than a bit high to me-- FDA recommendations [1] are that fridge temperatures should remain below 40°F (~4.5°C) for food safety (to inhibit bacterial growth). This fridge is never making it below 5°C, and (from the real-time data linked in the post) it's peaking uncomfortably close to room temperature-- I see one spike all the way up to 16.5°C, and it doesn't look like it recovers quickly at all.
