I made something similar as well (that includes both 3.11, 95, 2000, XP, CDE and Mac OS 9, and also all the default color schemes of those): https://nielssp.github.io/classic-stylesheets/?theme=win9x&s...

My focus was not so much on pixel perfect, but instead on creating something that would also work and look aesthetically pleasing on modern systems, like with higher DPI monitors and such. So one of the the things I did was to recreate all the icons and symbols in SVG.

I tried posting it as a Show HN when I added XP and Mac OS 9, but it didn't get much attention. Maybe the title of the project isn't as catchy.

To echo the other comments: this is beautiful work!

Hacker News, thank you for all the links and all the great reading. Now I have to say goodbye.

I’m with my wife Bess (https://bessstillman.substack.com/) and my brother Sam, and crying, but it is okay. At the end of Lord of the Rings Gandalf says to the hobbits, "Go in peace! I will not say: do not weep; for not all tears are an evil.” And that is how I feel now. Ending prematurely hurts, but all things must end, and my time to end is upon me.

Absolutely heartbreaking. Your writing has been a gift. Thank you for everything.

my problem with this is that they aren't telling you what they're selling.

they say they're selling deep Sid chip emulation, but for what platform and for what formats? if I knew, I'd either be all over it, or wait until they supported what I was after (in my case, AU synth on macos), but without any information on what I'd be buying, it's a very hard sell.

There's a system compatibility table on Plogue's main page for it. Standalone, VST3, AU and AAX on macos.

The "Tertiary button" example in the article. How is this a button? It's a piece of text. Zero visual indication whatsoever that it functions as a button.

I've done my fair share of front end dev and I like modern flat designs, however these text-only buttons take it too far.

I liked the piece overall but this felt like granting an imprimatur to dark pattern design.

There was an article some years ago (2 or 3?), that described a drone (or drones?) that flew 24/7 over Mexico city taking high resolution video of the entire city at all times.

Whenever there was a crime, the police could zoom into that location at the time of the crime and then run backwards to see where the vehicles came from. They then knocked on that door.

I'm disappointed that I can't seem to find it using Google anymore, maybe it was from a movie or TV show?! That would be weird though, because it seems technically quite reasonable to achieve and hard to believe governments wouldn't jump on it.
