Rent a dedicated server, setup mullvad wireguard on it or whatever. Download stuff to said server using wireguard.

Sure, you can also use Tor. The people engaged in copyright-related illegality generally don't.

But then you need to rent a server without leaving any hint on your real identity. Which means going to some dodgy corners of the internet.

I certainly wouldn't attempt

I think my software engineering job will be safe so long as big companies keep using average code as their training set. This is because the average developer creates unnecessary complexity which creates more work for me.

The way the average dev structures their code requires like 10x the number of lines as I do and at least 10x the amount of time to maintain... The interest on technical debt compounds like interest on normal debt.

Whenever I join a new project, within 6 months, I control/maintain all the core modules of the system and everything ends up hooked up to my config files, running according to the architecture I designed. Happened at multiple companies. The code looks for the shortest path to production and creates a moat around engineers who can make their team members' jobs easier.

IMO, it's not so different to how entrepreneurship works. But with code and processes instead of money and people as your moat. I think once AI can replace top software engineers, it will be able to replace top entrepreneurs. Scary combination. We'll probably have different things to worry about then.

Wow. To me, the big news here is that ~30% of devices now support AV1 hardware decoding. The article lists a bunch of examples of devices that have gained it in the past few years. I had no idea it was getting that popular -- fantastic news!

So now that h.264, h.265, and AV1 seem to be the three major codecs with hardware support, I wonder what will be the next one?

alex_duf · 21 days ago
That's not at all how I read it.

They mentioned they delivered a software decoder on android first, then they also targeted web browsers (presumably through wasm). So out of these 30%, a good chunk of it is software not hardware.

That being said, it's a pretty compelling argument for phone and tv manufacturers to get their act together, as Apple has already done.

I wonder if that would allow Signal to become interoperable with Whatsapp?

I'm sad that drives don't have a 'shutdown' command which writes a few extra bytes of ECC data per page into otherwise empty flash cells.

It turns out that a few extra bytes can turn a 1 year endurance into a 100 year endurance.

I guess the only way to do this today is with a raid array?

Prior to this it was possible to get the same effect by defining a tool with the schema that you wanted and then telling the Anthropic API to always use that tool.

I implemented structured outputs for Claude that way here: https://github.com/simonw/llm-anthropic/blob/500d277e9b4bec6...

alex_duf · a month ago
It's not 100% success, I've had responses that didn't match my schema.

I think the new feature goes on to limit which token can be output, which brings a guarantee, where the tools are a suggestion.

I refuse to donate. Trillion dollar companies depend leech on it and yet refuse to spend money on it.

Let it fail and see what happens.

alex_duf · a month ago
but do you want it to be dependent on trillion dollar companies?

I used to put stickers on my work laptop. Then one day I upgraded my laptop, which meant handing over my old one with stickers.

Which meant scrubbing it (there's no reason I'll let whoever receives it to scrub it for me)

Which was an absolute pain.

I don't put stickers on my laptops anymore.

well deserved

I've heard he was working on an extremely low latency gaming system: Kyber

Anyone has any recent news on that subject?
