> I wanted to announce this on April Fool's Day, but just couldn't make the timing work.

Thank you for not doing that. Releasing a wacky feature on April 1 is funny. Discontinuing a service that people might rely on is distinctly un-funny.

I disagree. It would probably prompt a few support calls and emails, but otherwise I think it would be great.

The opposite is also sometimes true.

Sometimes you don't realise how GOOD something is until you leave.

Regret follows both.

This for sure. I've learned to love where I'm at, but if I knew what I know now I doubt I would ever left my first job. At least not as soon as I did.

Which is a C function and not safe at all. It is easy to make your own print function in C++ that is safe and easy to use, but there is no such function in std.

Why are you worried about how safe printing to terminal is? Genuinely curious, I don't work in software dev.

Maybe I’m missing some recent events but I’ve only heard or seen anything political in regard to state political leanings and especially “identity politics”.

Just feels weird to feel so strongly about that aspect of a programming language. If people held a principled view they’d be horrified of how militaries use anything and everything mainstream.

adamdusty · 3 years ago
I'm pretty sure they're talking about the community politics. There has been plenty of drama around rust.

To be clear your claim is that because Google chrome has some use of a programming language where the community leans left, people are going to meaningfully stop using chrome?

Some people are so fragile…

adamdusty · 3 years ago
Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't think they're talking about state level politics.

That’s not just NY. I suspect it’s basically all of the US.

In the southwest it's tacos instead of pizza, in my experience.

Most Americans are completely incapable of that, and it’s not just strength hah.

Then they wouldn't be able to climb out the window either.

More accurate title: some aspects of technology have gotten objectively worse.

E.g. for cars, the whole touchscreen thing instead of knobs for things like temperature control is worse, but on the other hand cars are safer than they used to be.

Similarly, while yes there are some aspects of video games that have gotten worse, like needing to download a patch for an offline game, there's some stuff that's better: there's a veritable mountain of indie games out there with great content for a great price. WAY cheaper than games used to be, when you look at inflation.

adamdusty · 3 years ago
How many cars are actually like that? I only know a few people with newer (2020+) cars and all of them have physical controls as well as touch screen controls. They're all Asian cars so maybe that's why, but anecdotally I've never seen a car completely controlled by a touchscreen.

Life isn't just about the easiest path or money. Some people see value in working hard for things and might view the medical field as a way to bring something positive to the world as opposed to figuring out how to serve ads to people.

I tolerate it because I don't care. They could keep the banner there year round and I would still use it and not care.
