I'm an American too, and I trust an app that has "china" somewhere in it's org chart more than Zuckerberg or any meta product.

Because youre ignorant of what china somewhere in the org chart means?

I hate how Twitch puts over a minute of pre-roll ads before you can start watching a stream. They should at least wait 60 seconds, I can't imagine how many people have chosen not to catch a new stream because they'd immediately have to sit through over a minute of ads before even getting to any content.
aborochoff · a year ago
Yeah I agree. I think twitch does too since as a streamer you have the ability disable pre roll ads for your stream by running an ad (it will disable pre roll for a set amount of time).

It seems like they’re using it to incentivize streamers to run more ads so they’ll get better retention by turning off pre roll.

Great comment and it immediately made me think up the only use case which would appeal to me right now.

I have started swimming and I am timing myself with a stopwatch on my wrist. I am already wearing goggles because hard contact lenses and freestyle. The watch is hard to see with the goggles on, and I have to 'search' the stop button which adds latency.

I would love to have a stopwatch in-view.

I think what you are wanting exists https://www.formswim.com/

FWIW I tried them out, I liked the screen, but the shape of the goggles really takes out your already limited peripheral vision which I couldn't get used to and returned them.

The building i currently live in is a 20+ storey apartment block that was made out of a converted office building built in the 60s. Given the housing prices in [checks notes] cities, it feels like a wave of residentializing is on the horizon.
aborochoff · 2 years ago
There was a good odd lots episode interviewing a developer about what it took to convert an office building to residential in nyc.

Fascinating theyre relying on starlink for operations. I heard starlink was fairly unreliable from folks who have it in remote areas.

“you can never have a safe emotional interaction with a thing or a person that is controlled by someone else, who isn’t accountable to you and who can destroy parts of your life by simply choosing to stop providing what it’s intentionally made you dependent on.”

Most human relationships arent evil, but it seems like the same people that would ‘fall’ for the AI in this way could be abused by a person. I guess sociopathic relationships at scale are the issue.

aborochoff commented on Lithium-ion batteries a growing fire hazard in NYC garbage trucks   gothamist.com/news/lithiu... · Posted by u/pseudolus

I think part of the problem is that the rules are just kinda... stupid? There is absolutely no reason why regular alkaline batteries can't end up in household garbage. They don't contain heavy metals or anything else that'd make them dangerous.

The rules are basically like this because the regulators figured you're too dumb to know which types of batteries are bad for the environment (lead-acid, the now-obsolete Ni-Cd, less significantly NiMH). And sure, better-tailored rules would confuse some folks, but I bet that compliance would be higher for the really bad stuff.

At least in nyc alkaline batteries do go in the normal trash.

aborochoff commented on Kanye West is buying Parler   theverge.com/2022/10/17/2... · Posted by u/michaelgrosner2
tptacek · 3 years ago
This is really a story about a celebrity's mental illness and public breakdown. If you haven't been following the news, West has spent the week saying increasingly unhinged things, not just about politics but about Pete Davidson, his wife, and (if I'm remembering right) his kids and the fake actor children that have been installed in his former home to corrupt them. He was interviewed for a show on Fox and a big chunk of what he said was edited out and later leaked; the "people at the Gap" knew about Uvalde, Kanye is now a Black Hebrew Israelite, &c. He's quite evidently sick, and these Parler people are scamming him.
aborochoff · 3 years ago
So apparently its evident to a lot of people on hacker news that kanye has a mental illness and is making bad decisions because of it.

If this is the case why hasnt someone tried to take power of attorney or something similar here?
