Most of those groups were co-opted by Big Tech. I can tell from personal experience 20 years ago. In my case Microsoft and Cisco put people dedicated to the standard and we actual coders lost just out of ballooning time required for meetings and pointless complexity.

You can probably say the same for most of STEM academia. That's why I respect the Berkeley people. They are often insane far-far-left zealots, but they are the least corrupted by corporations. That's why you can see great open things like RISC-V come out of "The People's Republic of Berkeley".

Yep. For instance, the linux foundation is just a shadow of its former self, full of CV-stuffing people from global corporations.

Look no further than to corona times, when the LF wanted to develop a global digital vaccine passport. That's basically helping authoritarians, and completely against the open source and decentralization spirit.

A new foudation needs to be laid, banning global corporations from participating. If not, after a few years, due to their power, money and influence, they will have taken over (again).

Contempt is very different to hate.

It is very interesting, in our polarized times, what people read into a statement, and if they interpret it charitably or in the worst possible way. Like you, I find contempt and hate very different.

If it was made easy and common for ordinary people to use.

True. For 99% of the people mining it yourself of demanding getting paid in crypto is not viable. That means you go to an exchange, and all you do is then logged at this government regulated exchange.

I suppose you could engage in some cloak and dagger exchange at night, but again, the 99% won't do that. The ones who do, are most likely capable of setting up their own services, anonymously, so they don't need to have a commercial, for-profit as their middleman.

Having worked with all major European clouds: Good luck, have fun opening a lot of support cases for things that should work ootb.
abc123abc123 · 3 days ago
I do, works perfectly if you know what you're doing. If you have no clue, jump to AWS and enjoy the lockin, if you do, jump to a EU provider, and enjoy not being locked in, and a vastly lower cost.

If you do all the stuff (DKIM etc) AND you're not on a banned IP, you're fine. It seems like this person couldn't find a non-banned IP. I know plenty of people who self host email and successfully send to Gmail.
abc123abc123 · 7 days ago
Yep. Know plenty of selfhosters who run email successfully. In fact, with all the email in a box packages out there, it's never been easier to self-host emails. One recommendation for those who are interested, is to choose a reputable VPS host with clean IP:s.

I thought the McD add was hilarious - I would have preferred it not be AI.
abc123abc123 · 11 days ago
Yes, it was brilliant! As for AI, who cares? It's a commercial. Laugh, and move on.

To me a fatal flaw in ActivityPub systems is that your identity is tied to a server. Yes you can port it, but it’s a hassle. That means the server ops become these little lords over little fiefdoms and a server just dying takes your identity with it.

This also means your reach and what you see depends on your choice of server. I very much don’t want that.

It’s also confusing to non-technical people. Join Mastodon! But which one? How do I pick one?

Technically speaking, Nostr is better. Your identity is a key. Servers are just dumb relays.

Unfortunately it seems to be nothing but crypto bros talking about crypto, or was last time I checked. Nobody uses it.

abc123abc123 · 13 days ago
Moving to another mastodon instance is simple. It takes 2-3 clicks and off you go. I think what you say was probably true in the past, but today, nothing could be simpler than taking your stuff to another instance.

"However, I also don’t like to carry two computers just to jot down personal notes. My remedy is to install a virtualization system and create a “personal” virtual machine."

I have the same problem, but I'm not sure if a VM is a good solution. The work OS has full access to the VM and I don't trust putting my personal things even in the VM. (I consider the work laptop backdoored and full with spyware.)

abc123abc123 · 15 days ago
Why bother with a VM? When I'm in that situation, I just run my stuff in the cloud and ssh to my machine, alternatively, ssh to my machine at home. Much more minimalist and light weight than a VM as long as your customer allows outgoing ssh and/or connections to a tor/i2p hidden service.
